YACT: Best $5,000 car, I've included a list.

This is very similar to a previous thread by another poster, but I don't care because I could talk about cars all day long. These are cars I found on www.cars.com for $5,000 and because I am 20 years old and plan on driving the car for a while, insurance / reliability / gas mileage are main concerns. Also, I will probably purchase a warranty and I believe there are certain requirements such as mileage and age that are taken into account. Warranty Gold has a limit of like 70k miles and 95 or 96+, I don't remember, but these warrantys are for 3yrs or 36k miles and cover just about everything, including wear and tear on all parts, power windows, etc. So while some of these cars are more desireable than others, should a warranty be a huge deal? Or no? I'm not a fanboy of any specific type, I'm just listing these by manufacturers I believe to be reliable (The Big 4... Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru)

------Nissan
1. '96 Maxima SE, 5-speed / sunroof, 99k miles $4950
2. Various other Sentras / 200SX / Altimas / Maximas '95-'98 for under 5k
3. '95 300ZX Twin Turbo 5-sp, 61k miles, $4750 (prolly way too high of insurance, so I prolly won't consider this one)
4. Various Nissan Pickups / Pathfinders '95+ with less than 100k (lower gas mileage / maybe high ins) ... this would come in handy when I need to ship things or do anything else, but I am not sure about higher costs of fuel and insurance. Any ideas how much a nissan pickup SE 4wd or pathfinder se v6 would have on a 20 year old male insurance?
-----

----- Toyota
1. '96 Avalon, 90k miles, loaded $4995
2. Various Camrys / Corrollas / Tercels / Paseos 95+ for under $5,000 with less than 100k
3. '97 Tacoma 2WD, 5peed, big tires, 80k miles $4750 (once again, a pickup truck...will it hurt insurance / gas?)
-----

-----Honda
1. Various Civics / Accords / couple Preludes 95+ with less than 100k for $5k
-----

-----Subaru
1. Various Legacys / Outbacks / Imprezas 95+ with less than 100k for $5k --- AWD is good, but how does this impact gas mileage / insurance...
-----

If anything, AWD is good for insurance.

I agree, Civic fits the bill nicely.. heh.. Bland, but it will get you to point A to point B reliably and cheaply.

Really, any of the cars you've chosen should be a pretty good bet though.

M4H, can you be sure? I drive an '02 Civic LX with side airbags now, and I pay $2000 / yr under my fathers insurance and I have a clean record. It is one reason I am getting an older / cheaper car. I have been told that Civics have high insurance because they are stolen a lot, have a lot of breaking & entering claims, get in a lot of riceboy wrecks, etc... but I cannot verify any of this with my ins. company.

I recently got quotes for the car I own now, & a Porsche 944 I was thinking about buying.

My Accord (DX hatchback) was MORE to insure ($20 a month, but still...) than the Porsche. Both were 1986.

Unfortunately it's true that Civics get higher insurance because of that. But it's mostly the riced-out ones that get B&E'd / stolen / wrecked. Keep a low profile and you can drive the thing forever.

Your insurance does seem kinda high. I'm only paying CDN$1200, under the same company as my parents, for an '03 LX sedan.

That's just retarded. 😛

OT - How much for the 944? 😀

Civic.

Yeah probably. I got my 2000 Ford Taurus SE for $4700 w/ 65k and it's a pretty good car for the money. The insurance is uber-cheap, but reliability and gas mileage (19/28 roughly?) probably aren't for you.

You hear Ford's got heated bumpers on all their new cars now?
It's so your hands don't get cold in the winter.

Probably has a salvage title on it.

Yea, I would steer clear of that one..

but possible, here in GER too, for instance the Golf VR6 was way higher in insurance than a Porsche 911 (because of theft and inexpensive but fast)

Flood Salvage Vehicle
The engine turns over, but it will not start
Will be sold as is in a non-running condition

I can't believe they'd even list that. From the ad on cars.com, it's in "Good" condition. Time to fire up a nasty email.

certainly not inexpensive to repair but Porsche is the most relible brand there is (according to ADAC (like AAA)) And: Dont remember the exact figure, something like 60-80% of all Porsches ever built are still in use.... If that doesnt say somethin'

Wow! I just looked up late 80s Porsche 944s.... tons of 'em around $5,000 and they all are in excellent shape because I guess people take care of them. Obviously I won't be able to buy a warranty for it... but could you give me a general idea of how much a repair / maintenance would be?

Oil filter / oil?

Radiator cost? Belts? Alternator? Starter? etc.

AFAIK, you have to be really ontop of the maintenance, especially the timing belts. That may not hold true for all the Porsche models, but.. yeah.

I dunno if I'd buy one as a daily driver......

As for oil, if it's air cooled you would definately want to use synthetic.

Yeah, it would, if you had any assurance that the turbo works.

Salvage cars are bad. Do not buy them.
