He's just an actor having fun. I hope I enjoy my job off the clock as much as he does.

Hm, I just got an idea for something auction off on eBay.

"Swift kick in the nads. For an extra fee, I will show up at your house, or else you come to my place, and upon receipt of payment, you are allowed a single kick; this isn't a Dutch Auction, so you only get the one."

Because there's a time and place for everything, and if you get in someone's face and start acting like a jackass, you're probably going to get popped.

Do I think that his show and his movie are no better than racist jokes? Yes.

His Borat character might be funny if he claimed a fictional country as a home; calling himself Kazakh takes out any humor IMO. Also, the stories of exploitation that are coming to light around the people he features in his sketches and in the movie are disturbing.

It's a sad commentary on humanity that we view these sorts of things as funny. Sadder that it's not anything new.

I have not seen the movie nor do I plan to. I agree with you that on the surface it seems like nothing more than just one big racist joke of a movie and it's somewhat appalling that it could be so popular and people think it is so "funny." That's on the one hand. But having not seen the movie maybe I should reserve my criticism. Because when I think about it, Borat could also be trying to act as a magnifying glass held up to some of America's own silly cultural habits and values. Kind of like seeing our culture through the eyes of a child, if you will. Maybe it's meant to make us examine ourselves. Is it really this guy from Khazakstan who's "dumb" or "ignorant" of American culture? Or is it our culture that is so detached from the way the majority of the world lives? And what is it this movie is supposed to relay to us? Can anybody who's seen the movie enlighten me on which perspective you think is accurate about Borat? Is he showing us ourselves in a different light? Or is he just making fun of people who want to come to America but don't know the culture? Or a little of both?

Not to mention every time I hear his name I imagine him in a sparkly white outfit with ice skates and el oh el out loud.
You DO know that's just a character he plays, right? :disgust:

Except on ATOT, which is my long running beef with this place.

You mean the poor exploited racist rodeo man, and the dumb drunk frat boys?

That movie was great at exploiting assh0l3s of all kinds, that's for sure. From idiot I-think-I'm-Dennis-Leary New Yorkers who told Borat to get the ****** out of their faces, etc.. when people in any other city would just laugh, to rednecks wanting to hang homosexuals and Muslims. I don't see how anyone could construe the movie as racist. That would be like calling a holocaust documentary racist because it shows Nazis persecuting Jews. The only people who should be offended are Kazhaks. Then again, the MO these days is feigning outrage.

Did both of you temporarily lose the ability to read when you saw the part where I said I was not offended? Or maybe it's just the normal selective comprehension. After all, why evaluate my actual position when it's so much easier to simply build a straw man and attack a view that I didn't actually describe.

But you're not "in someone's face" online. It's a little different when you have some nutjob (in character or not) getting in your business when you're just trying to go about your day.

Whether you find it offensive is irrelevant.. You said that his show and movie are no better than racist jokes, which they ARE better than.

Ahhh, so aggressively ignorant behavior is more tolerable online, because you're not "in someone's face", just on their monitor?

Kewl.

Then BITE ME, you vaguely French girly man, you! :p ;)

He's said some things that deserve this reaction, but this wasn't one of them. Of course, the guy could say it was payback for all the times he said something stupid and nobody was there to hit him....

I haven't seen the movie, but these are the most interesting questions to me. I've seen Da Ali G show and Borat seemed to me to be a character that was used to poke fun at how Americans treat foreigners, and what kind of a reaction you can get from people by making outlandish racist remarks (see the rendition of "Throw a Jew Down The Well" that a bar full of rednecks got a little too into). This is not about the nation of Kazakhstan, at all. It's about American culture. Taking such offense to satire makes me wonder if the movie is really that different from the show. I will reserve my judgement on the film until I have seen it.
