I currently have this.

Sad I know.

The deal is my roommates and I just moved into a new apartment(townhouse). In our old apartment(small arse POS) we could crank up the above system and hear it fairly well through the walls. Well in the new place I can crank it up but I can barely hear it upstairs(yes, I'm a picky bastard).

Two days ago I bought a pair of these. A nice step up for sure.

Anyway, my dilemma:

I trying to decide between punishing my new speakers and keeping the old system or selling/giving away the old system and getting a lower-end Denon or Onkyo receiver. The plus is that I would be giving the new speakers the juice they deserve. The negative is that I would be losing my 5.1 surround sound. I can't decide. I know if I sell the old system I'll be lucky to get $100 for it. I currently have the money for the new receiver but it would seriously cut into my computer upgrade funds.

What would you do if you were in this situation?

You have two ears.

Some of the best systems in the world are 2.0 or 2.1

Either way make sure you fronts are good, regardless of what speakers you keep

The Infinity's sound great when the receiver is outputting in stereo mode but when you go into 5.1 it just can't spare the juice to give them full power.

I've seen several reviews on Audioreview in which users believe the power output for each channel in 5.1 is around 40 watts compared to the 80 it probably puts out in stereo.

SO keep it in stereo.

Start with all new speakers (get some big 'uns for the fronts and put the Infinitys in back). Then decide if the receiver can hack it. If not, then get a better receiver. I have a Harman/Kardon myself. It works well and I think it?s very aesthetically pleasing (it looks fly, bro).

I think speakers will always make the biggest difference, so that's always the place to start.

So true. So very true. Speakers are 98% of it in home audio

I would be more than happy to buy all new speakers but unfortunately I don't have $1200 just laying around.

Honestly, I would return those Infinities you purchased, and get some Ascend Acoustics CBM170 Moniters. That is if you like neutral listening eviroment that truley reproduces accurate audio. I would believe they are light years ahead of those infinities for music and hold their own for home theater ( I own a 5 speaker setup from them and love it ).

I would start their and purchase pair for $328 ( not bad, for the quality the product delievers ). Next I would adivse you getting a decent reciever ( h/k, onkyo, denon, sony es, or pioneer elite). Personally, I would get a H/K 325. All are good, but each has its own sonic characteristics. This is my adivse dude...speakers you get are stores are good...but these are just way better. I think these are better than NHT SB3's I was auditioning at my house, which I liked. I saved a ton of money and have the sound I love.

I got the pair of Infinity's for $170 and I can get an Onkyo TXSR500 for $175(Though I rather get a Denon-1603 but they are around $340).
I'm sure all you audiophiles want me to have great speakers but I just don't have the means to get them. I'm just a lowly college student. :( For upstairs I have a set of Logitech Z-560s that are whipping my current setup's a$$ in the sound department.

Heh...yah I know how you feel, also a college student. It took me a few months before I could save up enough to get my setup 5 Speaker Ascend Package and SVS subwoofer ( 3 months ).

I had a few options. Go with some cheaper equipment. Buy it in parts, or suck it up and save my money, no eating out, no wasting money on items I didn't need, and no more movies. After that stint of no spending I had about $1700.00 bucks saved up. During this entire stint, I went out auditioned systems in the ~$2000.00 dollar range. At the end, I decided I would like to give an internet company a try, and I did not regret it, :). Dave at Ascend and Ron and Tom at SVS catered to my needs like there was no tomorrow. I recieved fast responses email wise a few personal phone calls, and I knew I was sold. Their CSR is phenomenal. Just take your time and see what your long term goal is with this system. Remember if you want to go 5.1 later you will need to timbre match your infinities with the similar infinities ( if not your sound will be all whacked ). Plot out your long term idea with this setup and go from their. If that requires you to save a little more before you buy speakers do it. I guess, its just advise I am spooning ya, :) Good Luck, and keep us updated.
