YA "should I go to the Dr" T. Alcohol intolerance + constant thirst?

Alright... Short history - I'm 25, occasional smoker, not a drinker.

About two years ago I started having issues when drinking.. If I have more than 3-4 drinks over a 2-3 hour period I get extremely sick the next morning..

It seems 'allergy' related.. I have allergies, and it would happen much worse with whiskey/beer compared to vodka. For example, if I have a rum and coke I can almost feel my stomach just... not liking it. I can stomach a few beers before my face starts feeling hot and clammy. If I take a benedryl before drinking it seems to help a lot.

I've basically just dealt with it since I don't drink often anyway..

Over the past few months I've realized that I consume a lot of water... I refill a 32oz container 4-5 times during an 8 hour period at work and another 3-4 glasses at home. I usually have to get up once at night to piss.

I'm starting to get a little worried about kidney problems or diabetes, and will make an appt but am curious of others opinions..

Edit:

Also, I drink a lot of coffee. 2-3 cups a day, 3 shots of espresso each. I'm wondering if I should cut back on my caffeine intake before seeing the Doc since it is a diuretic..

Why don't you go to a Doctor, maybe they can answer your questions?

the alcohol thing sounds like a nonissue. the drinking and peeing is likely related to all teh caffeine you take in. If you're really worried about it, you can go have yourself checked out for diabetes insipidus. You're unlikeyl to have type 2 diabetes at that age unless you're a real porker.

but really, i think its just the caffeine. At this point it might be hard for you to just stop the coffee to see whath appens but thats one thing you can try. Just lay off teh caffeine and see how much you pee.

Not a porker, although I have a horrible diet... I rarely eat breakfast, sometimes eat lunch, always have a huge dinner right before bed. I work all of the time and am extremely stressed out.

I called my Doc who has left for the day. I'm going to go ahead and make an appt for Friday and will update.

Btw - You're right, I can't just stop the caffeine.. Grr.. First thing I'm addicted to and it's fucking coffee. Figures.

Edit:

And btw, thanks for the honest help/response.

Doesnt sound like its anything serious. He might do a water deprivation test if he really suspects anything. I predict he'll just check yoru urine right there and tell you to cut down on the coffee. good luck

You could test your own sugar for diabetes. For about $30 you can get a meter and test strips from WalMart(buy their Relion brand).

As far as the alcohol goes... Maybe you're just intolerant of alcohol. Try staying away from the sweet crap. Anything mixed with soda(other than seltzer) is gonna taste like ass, and be too sweet. Try Johnnie Walker Black straight up.

It happens even with Vodka and cranberry but whiskey is the worst.

Good idea on the test strips, I may try that..

How's your weight been? My daughter lost a ton of weight when she got diabetes. She's back to normal now that she's using insulin. Your coffee use is light compared to me. When I was working, I'd go through 2 pots per day. I've cut back to 1 pot now. I'd estimate I drink 2L of water per day, but that varies. It could be 1.5L on the low side, to 4L on the high side. I don't think I urinate more than would be expected. Coffee takes some out of you for sure, but I never get up at night to pee.

I'm about 5'10 and weigh about 165. I've been about the same weight for a long time..

Regular drip coffee does nothing for me caffeine-wise..

And I should correct myself, I don't actually wake up to pee. Usually I am *almost* asleep and then realize I have to pee. I get up, pee, take a swig of water, and am ok for the night.

That all sounds pretty normal. I think you just like water :^P

Going to the doctor's a good idea though. If nothing else it'll ease your mind. It sounds to me like your fairly normal. Normal enough anyway.

Awesome, thanks again to all.. I'll leave this alone until I hear what Doc has to say :)

You may have an alcohol intolerance. However, you don't really want to take benedryl while drinking since it may interact with the ethanol to create undesired effects (increased sedation or depressive effects). You should probably head to the doctor. You may have a grain allergy as well since vodka is less disruptive than others. I'd definitely go to the doctor though to find out one way or another.

Heh, I was just about to post the same thing. I have two friends who had symptoms similar to the OP: one turned out to be allergic to alcohol and the other to gluten. Head to a doc, get tested, and you'll know.

Lol, that's the perfect anecdote to bring this full circle. It may even be that the OP just produces low amounts of alcohol dehydrogenase (typical in Asian populations and lower in women). No matter what it is, only some allergy tests and blood work can show what's going on. Good luck OP.

I think the problem with Asians is a lack of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase.

Yeah, getting checked out would be very much worth it, if you can afford it. Allergies and sensitivities can have unexpected symptoms.
