I'm currently 185, medium body frame, 6'0. I'm trying to get between 170 - 175 over the next 1 - 2 months, and I thought I'd take the following approach to losing weight:

Consider that back in the glory days of basking the sun in the African Savannah, we humans used to bask in the sun all day and go hunting maybe once/twice during the day between bouts of vigorous sex. Think lions in those Nat Geo specials. So I decided to model my habits based on that. So here's what I do:

Protein Suplement + cereal in the morning

salad in the afternoon (consisting mostly of lettuce and assorted vegetables)

fruits late afternoon (an apple or two/orange and some low fat yogurt)

1.5 hours of exercise in the evening (0.5 for weight training, mostly upper body and an hour of cardio)

OR

1 hour (0.5 cardio and 0.5 weight training)

dinner: Generally healthy. More vegetables, some carb.

I try doing this 3-4 times a week. if possible, 5. the weekends are for rest.

I get about 40 gm of protein a day. I also take vitamin supplements.

So what do you think of this workout? My main aim is to build cardiovascular strength and get some lean muscle in at the same time. Am I doing too much cardio?

And no, I haven't included the vigorous sex part yet, though I'm working on it. And I'm a vegetarian. Very un-caveman like, but oh well.

Also, I remember vaguely hearing about somebody who modelled his physical activities based on stone-age man. Ever hear of something like that?

Aim for 2300 calories a day with a 40-40-20 split. 40% protein, 40% carbs, 20% fat. If you get stuck, cycle the carbs. High one day, moderate and nearly none(at least 25g).

Dont do cardio for more than 40-45 minutes a day, even less if youre doing HIIT, unless you want to see all your muscle go away.

If you want to keep/maybe build some muscle during your diet i suggest a BCAA supp intra workout. If youre not already on a multi , get a good one.

Drink at least 1.5 gal or water a day. Good luck.

You're going to want to consume more than 40 total grams of protein a day. Aim for between .7 and 1.0 times your lean body mass in grams of protein daily. So if I were to assume that you are 20% body fat (complete guess on my part), that would give you 148 pounds of lean body mass. So you would want to consume between 104 and 148 grams of protein per day. It is hard to get that much protein in a vegetarian diet, doubly so if you eschew the use of soy foods, so you may have to lean on dairy and supplements for a majority of it.

Many people actually model their diet on the hunter-gatherer concepts. It's called the Paleo diet, and it consists of lean meats and vegetables/fruits (no grains, dairy, processed foods, etc.). I don't know about modeling one's activities like that, though, although I would think short, high intensity exercises would be most in line with that type of life (waiting during the hunt, then running down and killing an animal, or even running away from one, involve large bursts of action as opposed to extended endurance sessions).

So what do you think of this workout?

Considering you gave us no information as to what your weight training routine looks like or what you mean by "cardio," or even your daily caloric intake or macros (with the exception of 40g of protein), it's hard to critique your routine.

What I will say is 1) Way too little protein and 2) train your whole body in the gym.

Diet is pretty vague but from what you said it sounds great if you're going for the etheopian look.
