Al least you have the warranty. Also, you can't make this entire thread and NOT tell us what you paid! Ballpark it at least!

People only remember the horror stories.

The 740 V8 engine is very reliable. Here is a list of common problems:

Dead instrment cluster pixel .
Catalytic converters failing
Power steering hoses leaking
Cup holders failing
Radiator failures. Plastic neck breaking
Original Water pumps with plastic impellers failing
thermostat failing

Bolded are common problems with ANY car.

Yes, those are common problems with most vehicle but other vehicle Cats don't cost over $2000 to fix like the BMW 740 or fail as early as 50K miles. But the big grin on your face while driving is worth the money IMHO. Enjoy your new ride.

I have been reading "user" reviews on bimmers for several different models off and on and 1 common rant is the cup holders. I find that very funny...

i guess in german everyone only uses shot glasses in there cars. The thing is so tiny. Oh well. I dont often drink in my car anyways.

How much did you pick it up for? I know a guy who is selling his 740I 20k miles for 21k. He said he didnt want to ruin it like his Benz, which is littered with garbage has dozens of stains and has been in and out of the shop for the last year.

sweet ride....SWEET RIDE thats my dream car, the 7series, so nice work!

it was my dream once too but now its reality 🙂 🙂 🙂

make it happen man. it is still a dream in someway.....a dream to drive it.

My Mom-In-Law had a '98 740i (identical to the car you just bought). It was a really sweet car with gobs of power and beautiful style but man, that thing was a money pit. I would definitely not recommend a late model 7 series unless you have money to burn.

Hers needed a new power steering pump to the tune of $2700. She had a bunch of other problems with it as well so she got rid of it and bought a newer Mercedes E class.

Yeah, how exactly does a cup holder 'fail' anyway? Does it bust off, dumping your piping hot skinny mocha latte w/nutmeg sprinkles into your Gucci's or something?

EDIT: Oh, and not to be a 'spelling-Nazi' but your poll should be 'STFU GIGAPET, YOU'RE AN IDIOT!'

Dude.... never buy anything where you have to pay interest unless it's important - like a house. Cars aren't worth it. Although, I'm sure that's been mentioned in this thread a few times. 😛

Not to be a "grammar nazi" but.... it should be either "....dumping your piping hot skinny mocha latte w/nutmeg sprinkles into your Guccis or something?" or "....dumping your piping hot skinny mocha latte w/nutmeg sprinkles into your Guccis' [pockets or whatever] or something?"

2 grand for cats? Thats like aftermarket exhaust money right there. I'd prolly be smarter/cheaper to just buy a full aftermarket setup for that much cash. I know I would at least look into it

Anybody know the reliability of the E39 5-Series? 528, 530, and 540.
