My personal slogan in college was: "I really Hate beer... Until I've had a few."

There are so many kinds of beer that just saying beer tastes bad in general shows how little you really know.

SOme beer tastes bad, some beer tastes great. You just have to figure out which kind you prefer.

christ.. i cant believe im gonna reply to this...

because everyone has different fvcking tastes. I dont know why you are lumping all beer together either. Clearly you've only ever tried it once and didnt like it. Thats like saying "soda sucks". There are some beers I love, and some I hate. Most people dont just drink it to get drunk. Trust me, there are far cheaper ways to get drunk than even the cheapest beers. Its all about individual tastes: just because you didnt like the one beer you tasted, doesnt mean that everyone who drinks beer secretly hates it and is just trying to look cool by drinking it.

So go back to your parents basement and drink mountain dew and vodka.

OP, do you have some actual problem with beer? I don't like sushi, but I don't go round saying 'ewww yuk, sushi is disgusting, why are you eating that sushi you loser, etc...

What makes you say that?

seriously how can anybody like this crap?

OK, you didn't like the beer you tried. There are a couple of sources of bitterness in beer:
Hops contribute a acid to beer that tastes bitter. Depending on the amount and type of hops used in the beer you didn't like, you get varying degrees of bitterness. CO2 will contribute a small degree of bitterness to the flavor profile of a beer. Finally, an improperly made beer MAY have tannins, which all contribute a noticible bitterness.

I hope you don't think that just because you've tried one brand of beer that you've sampled all of varieties of beer that exist. If you want something less bitter, try tasting a kolsch, american pale ale, wheat, stout, or porter.

And finally, SOME people may drink it b/c they think its cool, but most people drink beer because they genuinely like it. Of course some folks never find a beer they like...and thats just the way the world works....but I hope you don't end up thinking all beers are the same, because there is more variation in beers than there is in wine!

Beer has a lot longer history than just its ability to get someone intoxicated. In some of the earliest cultures it was a means of preserving a harvest because beer lasts longer than bread. Then in the middle ages the church would control the manufacture of beer because it was safer than water to drink and provided a monopoly for the vatican over people. Like other people have said there are many of means of intoxication, yet people still like to drink beer, overgerneralizations are bad.

It's an acquired taste for most people. To be honest, I don't particularly like drinking beer, but I really like the smell of it.

Why do people enjoy things like pickles or cheese? The tastes and smells of these foods can be pretty offensive. Blue cheese tastes like the smell of mold to me, and I can't stand it, but I know a few people who love it. When I was little, I hated pickled food but now I love dill pickles, sauerkraut, and kim-chi.

Since the OP is clearly 12 years old, and has got a sip of his old man's Coors light once in his life, i'd say he's not really qualified to say he doesn't like beer ;)

There are thousands of brands of beer out there, millions if you count people's homebrew, and some of it is awful, some of it is awesome...(most of the homebrew is awful).

Remember that beer tends to be cheaper than wine or other alcholic drinks, gets you drunk for less money.

so beer is for poor people who hate their life?
explains everything now!

No, underage drinkers don't tend to have a lot of money, sure I know people who drink whisky to get drunk, but it is uncommon.

Most people woudln't - but if your only purpose is to get drunk, and you cannot stand the taste of beer, why not drink something that tastes good to you? Unless you are a minor, and beer is all you have available - that is the only reason I can think of.......

Just go get yourself a Full Sail Amber, or an nice big bottle of Arrogant Bastard - Mmmmmmm! :)

This turned into a better post than I originally thought it would turn into. Never knew so much about beer.

What makes you say that?

Im guessing personal experience...

It's just like blending vegetable juice.. probably not the yummiest stuff which is why we don't ALL do it. That's why we prefer fruit juices with some sugar and some ice cream (smoothies) so it tastes better.

If OP was asking why smoothies suck (when they are like accepted by the public to be tasty things) then I would question his intelligence.

However, things like beer, really it's not that good. I drink coffee sometimes, but it's ok. Tea is a lot better in terms of taste because there's the herb-like scent too. But beer? Honestly, if you oculdn't get drunk off beer, would you really drink it? If it wasn't this "big boy" thing like cigarettes once were, would you really drink it?

Could you honestly say it tastes GOOD? I mean without the alcoholic effect, you would drink beer over a can of coke, a milkshake, a yummy frappuccino, a jamba juice? Really?

I swear without the alcohol, we wouldnt drink it. So to those who say it's great or it's yummy... is it really?

People eat sushi cuz it's yummy, not because they want to get the wasabi spicy tingling effect in their tongue. Thus, they appreciate food for its taste. Beer on the other hand is different.

I'm not a beer fan per say but somethings just go naturally together, like peanut butter and jelly. While I rarely drink beer on it's own (I prefer vodka or wine), there's nothing quite like a cook steak served with a pint of belgium beer. anyone ever have the blithering idiot? SOoo good!

Beer can be good. Embrace it. And to DLeRium, yes, there are times when an ice cold beer tastes pretty damn good. Most other times though I drink it for the alcohol effects.

I personally don't LOVE beer, but I won't outright reject it or anything. Hell, I had some today while watching the game, but what I'm saying is a lot of times I find myself not really liking the drink all that much, but drinking because everyone else is or it would be a little better to be slightly tipsy. I had some of the apricot stuff from Pyramids brewery which is one of the best beers I've had so far, but I just find it interesting that we can all love alcohol so much
