I hated it when I was younger, assuming all beers tasted like what I'd tried (all golden crap). A few years ago I started experimenting and found microbrews and different types, some of which are actually quite good. I would still never consider a coors, hamms, bud, miller, pabst, etc. They're all clone crap. There are some stouts, ales, etc that are nice occassionally.

first time i had beer it was a 5:1 pizza to beer ratio. couldn't take the taste. Now...I only take grey goose.

Also, tea and coffee aren't inherently bitter either. Tea is only bitter if prepared improperly, and some high-grade teas never get bitter (e.g. Monkey Picked Oolong). Coffee is only bitter if overroasted and prepared improperly as well.

I have never tasted a green tea that did not have at least a hint of bitterness, or at least a taste that can be interpreted as bitterness (taste often associated with base, don't know the word in english.. soapy?) And I have tried a lot of teas because my grandfather is very particular about tea.

Well, it's possible you're interpreting tannins and/or caffeine as bitter as both give a similar tactile sensation. Neither are available in any notable quantity unless the tea is prepared improperly. A lot of people try to prepare green tea the same as they would a black. Green tea is very sensitive to temperature, so if you're hitting it with boiling water for 3 minutes it will come out tannic and otherwise harsh every time. Something like 175F-185F for 1-2 minutes is usually ideal, but it depends on the tea.

Prepared properly, a green tea can be herbaceous, floral and almost sweet all at the same time. A good Pouchong or an Oolong can be even more so. A Taiwanese Monkey Picked or Tung Ting Oolong sometimes taste like rose water and wheat grass, for example.

Finally, some teas don't get tannic no matter how long or how many times you steep them. Monkey Picked Oolong is the best example of this. It's smooth no matter what you do to it.

I can't imagine coffee not being bitter either though but my experience with it is extremely limited.

Coffee will of course always have some hint of bitterness just as a wine will always have a hint of alcohol, because both components are a necessary part of the drink: caffeine and alcohol of course, respectively. A great coffee can sometimes be so intensely fruity, earthy, chocolately, etc. that you'd have to concentrate to find any bitterness; a great wine is the same way.

Sorry for waxing pedantic about tea/coffee in a beer thread. I can't help myself sometimes.

Beer tastes good
Coffee tastes good

Crappy beer tastes bad (miller lite, natty, etc)
Crappy coffee tastes bad (maxwell house, 8'o clock, etc)

Don't drink crappy beer/coffee and it won't be a problem.

I like it in moderation, but seriously couldn't drink myself drunk with beer alone, I'd need something with flavor like Mike's Hard Lemonade.

it is like bitter. people just drink it because they think it looks cool.
seriously how can anybody like this crap?

Coffee is bitter too, are you stupid?

Some stuff is spicy, I like spicy food. Oh you don't? Well then if you don't then I dont see how anyone could like spicy food.

I drink beer in my house, alone, or with my wife, one a day, or two a day, if Im out with my friends and want a buzz I will drink more.

I enjoy the taste of beer, good beer that actually has taste that is.

I would place you in the ignorant welp category.

people like a lot of things that are bitter, coffee, tea, chocolate.

but they also pill on mass sugar on those same things. people dont pill on sugar in beer.

I drink coffee black often... no sugar.

It's odd, all of my friends and co-workers LOVE beer. But I've never liked it (and neither has my wife).

During the past 3 weeks I've actually had quite a few beers. It's not as bad as I remember, but I'd never drink the stuff just to get drunk. It's too filling and tequila or vodka does the trick much faster and better.

Clearly you are not old enough to drink anyway. Perhaps in 8 - 10 years when you can legally buy a beer you might change your mind. In the mean time leave daddy's beer alone.

I think the word I was looking for is astrigent. I don't find the taste of tea unpleasant because of it (I love green/some oolong tea). Either the temperature I use is too high (never measured it, but not boiling) or I'm sensitive to the taste.

He's right. It tastes like garbage, like you're drinking rotten vegetables or something (Basically you are). It's stupid. If the object is to get drunk you'd be better off drinking shots of hard liquor. Jerks.

A lot of kids drink beer to get drunk, not because it tastes good.

No adult would drink beer just to get drunk, when there are thousands of drinks that taste better to them. Myself, I love the taste of beer, but then again, I'm not 16........

Remember that beer tends to be cheaper than wine or other alcholic drinks, gets you drunk for less money.

so beer is for poor people who hate their life?
explains everything now!

the first few beers i ever had i really did not like it. but it did not take long to start to enjoy the taste. in college it was a way to get drunk (did not do that often). Now i enjoy the taste of a good Pale ale or such.

a good beer while sitting outside with friends is great. heck just sitting out on my porch drinking a beer or two makes me very happy.
