you could easily build yourself a better computer for a third maybe even half of that price. so i wouldn't do it unless you are not comfortable building your own pc. intaht case, i would suggest going to a mom and pop pc store and have them build you one for cheap.

for $2330 you could build two systems that will perform better than that one. do what jpbelauskas suggested or try your luck with monarch, but dont get your hopes too high, i haven't really heard much from them ever since they took a dump on service and shippings.

IMHO a mom and pop store will probably charge you nearly the same amount. Having that said you can probably configure one online barebones and get it shipped to you for a lot less.

Yeah, for about $1500, you could build a computer with an X2, inculding monitor, that would perform much better than that XPS...

LOL i'll build you one for 100 dollars plus the parts and shipping costs that can best that overpriced XPS.

I just(2 days ago) got this system for $933.20(shipped and taxed) from Dell's outlet:

Dimension 8400 3.80GHz
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
1 GB DDR
1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
160 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
160 GB EIDE SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
256MB PCI Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) ATI Radeon X850 XT PE
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
48X CD RW Drive
16x DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability
RAID Cable

Your system isn't bad but it is overpriced.

d@mn, that is a good price considering that card alone is ~$400 or so. what exactly is a RAID cable?

It's a cable that kills bugs 😉

it's for mainly gaming. and also i have to buy a desktop, since i have to upgrade.

from yesterday, i just read reviews and decided that i'd go for AMD processor (any suggestions). probably X2.
and instead of X800 XL, i'd go for X1800 XL. X1800 XT is bit expensive for me, but so far X1800 XL in favor.

any more sites (newegg) that i can build a machine. i would try building the machines tonight from the mentioned sites.

go the 7800gt or 7800gtx, better bang for the buck currently.

what games?

just as a baseline i would go:
- x2 3800(if you want dc, if sc go 3200venice and o/c)

- epox nf4 ultra m/b

- 2GB (2x1GB) pc3200

- whatever hdd space you need, either sata or pata since there is not a performance difference, just get the cheapest for the size you want

- good quality psu, like pc&p, fortron, enermax, antec - ~450W

- dvd-rw

- 7800gt/x

- case to your liking

this should get you started

7800GT is slightly better than X1800 XL.
X1800 XT is better than 7800GTX.

right now, i'm favoring ATI cards.

thanks for the baseline system. i'd try and post the one that i build.

totally depends on the game, sometimes the 7800gtx is better, sometimes the x1800xt is better, but the difference in performance is not much, so you may want to see how much the $$$ difference is, just imo.

it'd be more appropriate to compare the x1800 xt with nvidia's new 512mb 7800 gtx. the new generation gtx is believed to be superior to the x1800 xt in the majority.

yeah, ATI RADEON is good for battlefield. NVIDIA GEFORCE is better in doom3.

currently, i'm into battlefield mod DC final.

i agree with the sentiment to build your own

Also dont get XP x64, its not 100% compatible with alot of programs and drivers. I tried out the 90 trial download and have had it installed but there is no point getting it. Little to no performance increase in most stuff, and too many probably headaches with software.

Build your own!!!

The 512MB 7800GTX will be more powerful than the x1800xt. It has 1.1ns ram, and 550Mhz clock speed, with 24 pipelines.

i picked this one. i think this is the slashed price. AMD just slashed the athlon prices.

either way you are still talking a small percentage of difference in fps, and your eye will not be able to tell, but your wallet will 😉. basically anything over a constant 60+fps and you can't tell. to each their own though.

you need to get bf2, EA/Dice did a good job with it, especially if you like DC Final, which will i would recomend a new build to have at least a 7800gt or comparable along with 2GB of ram if you are going to play over 1280x960 with high settings.

just get a 3800 and o/c to 4200 speeds since they both have the same amout of cache and this will save you ~$80. the 4400 doubles the cache but will set you back ~$500. for $320 you can't beat a 3800 o/ced.
