My current Moto X Play will be returned to Motorola as I'm still within the 14 day return window. It's nice but I think that a 5.5" phone was a step too far for me, even though this is the smallest 5.5" phone currently available! I've yet to sell my Nexus 5 so I'll keep hold of that and it'll become my primary phone again for another few weeks.

Very difficult decision when the new Nexus is just around the corner, but I prefer the location of the fingerprint scanner being on the side as well as the one handed usability of the Sony phone. I'm willing to give Sony a chance.

I'm not too fussed about glass back because it'll bring back fond memories of the Nexus 4.

kinda shoots down the rumor qualcomm made a revised SD810. Looks like it's the same SD810, just more aggressive cooling.

The screen quality on some of the previews of the Z5 Premium is not what I hoped for. The screen is noticeably purple-tinged, white point must be 9,000K+, and gamma looks wild as well. Worst of all, it's still got the touchscreen grids that are visible under bright light. They can be seen at 4:20~4:30 in the video below.

It is beyond me why Sony hasn't gotten rid of those yet. On my Xperia Z Ultra they are very distracting outdoors.

I suppose we should wait and see on production units, though you'd hope Sony would have learned from LG and the G3. It's better to not be the first to a new resolution if you trade-off other stuff like accuracy, brightness, power efficiency, etc.

Though the outdoor visibility in the video does look pretty bad (4:45)

Let's see - Sony seems to be aware of the challenges and actually took steps to address them - from the heatpipes to the large battery. Might be brute force solutions, but only thing that matters if they work seamlessly to the end consumer.

Sony phones have arguably been the best in the business when it comes to battery management, and as long as they have not sacrificed battery life ("2-day battery") it is difficult to criticize 4K as a "marketing ploy." As it is, their phones last longer than competitors' per charge. Viewed in that regard, 4K is purely a bonus without downside. Of course we can do the "what if.." thing, but I think that is rather pointless considering the cut-throat nature in this market segment. Besides, Sony offer 1080p phone and 720p in the Z5 family, meaning they are not removing options for consumers. I think they should be commended.

But Triluminous display technology has some problematic shortcomings for smartphones. The issues that I am seeing on Z5 are exactly the same kinds that pervade the past Z Series phones so I am not optimistic that they will be limited to pre-production units.

I'd have to agree. I can't see the pixels on my Note 2 or Z3 Compact, and lots of professional reviews criticized their DPI. I think at this point we should focus on battery life and body features, like water resistance and durability.
