I've had WinXp since I built this system in November and it really has never been a focus of my daily computing. To me, that's the best part and why I continued to use it. With past OSes like ME and ealier, I could not say that since I would have to reboot a couple times a day and had many problems. There is nothing better than install an OS and not have to worry about programs corrupting it or random BSODs and so far XP has pulled the auto updates down and installed them with any issues.

<< i kinda prefer 2000's simpler no-frills design though. XP has so much useless stuff i'd rather have disabled, and this is the Pro version!!! why, even finding system config options can be tedious with XP and all of it's "user-friendly" control panel and menus. but you'll learn to live with it though, and i actually prefer the more colorful interface (i like the interface, i just don't like all the bloatware and the for-the-dunderhead "protection")

:)

I had it installed for a week and went back to 2k. I don't like the "idiot" menus and the slow reaction to everything. I also don't like the fact that when I hit alt ctrl del the lock computer botton is gonee, so instead it ws windows key L. I did like the fact that it autoran my backup cd's(opend them) so I did not have to. I did not like the slow menus(I tried numerous proggies to help with this). I did not like the layout of the control panel. I did like the security. I did not like the colrfulness. Did not like how it had all the frills...it was too worm and colorful...I like the ice cold win2k better, does not hog my resources. I am going to wait as long as possible b4 leaving win2k...like win I had win3.1...took me til win98 to get 95.....

I find it amusing that so many people complain about things in XP that can be turned off or otherwise changed. I have installed XP on numerous computers only to enjoy excellent hardware support, excellent multimedia support (although you can't beat winamp), and excellent stability. The added work to go back to Windows 2000 vs. simply making the configuration changes in XP is a no-brainer...a BIG vote for XP.

I've never tried ME and I haven't used 2K that much, but all I can say is that XP is a markedly big improvement over 98SE which I was using for a couple years until now. There's a lot of stuff to configure in XP, which I like. Its also a lot easier to resolve conflicts with hardware, at least for me. Also, the transparency effects found in 2K and XP are tight. :D

I have 2000 on one machine and XP on another. I do like XP but I don't feel it was worth the money upgrading from 2000.

Thinks to check out before you switch to XP:

1. Will all your programs run on XP?
A number of my son's games will not work in XP no matter what is done (different compatibility modes, etc). I think there are lists out there for what works and what doesn't work in XP.

2. Will all your hardware work (well or work at all) in XP?
I'm still waiting for the manufacturers of my scanner and video capture card to write drivers that work in XP. Until then I can't use them. You can check the relevant manufacturers' site for updated drivers before you switch.

I am plenty happy with Win XP, but again I was with 2000 as well. The bottom line, if you are allready running 2000 Pro, then I wouldn't even bother paying $100 for XP Home. The new GUI is nice, but it's not a huge thing so if you are on 2000, I wouldn't bother paying $100 for the upgrade, but if you're running any 9x based OS, I have one word that will make you want to upgrade.................................................stability. Go get XP Home if you're on 95/98/Me.

Thanks to all for sharing the XP experience. Seems it's thumbs up overall. I went to a local computer show looking for a deal on XP but was a little late and it wasn't available. What bugs me most is not being able to install it on my second machine. The fact that I like to change systems around every few months bums me out too. What's up with that? Does anyone know if you change your motherboard are you out of luck with XP?
Maybe I'll wait until my wife buy's me the P4 1.6a and the Asus board. Fat Chance. ------------ Later---------------

Thumbs up for Windows XP Home and Pro Edition. I installed both on two computers, and haven been using them for 4 months with no problem, except the nvidia det driver issue a few months ago, but that wasn't XP's fault (IMO)

Upgrade from Windows 2000? I really don't feel that's worth the money unless you want to have the latest schtuff (Like so many of us are like out there). But Windows XP is great for me.
