Yes, to you and I it's not that complicated. In fact we can probably each do it in our sleep.

However, never forget that there are lots of people out there who know jack shit[/b] about computers.

And if you don't believe me, check out the tech support horror stories on the internet. Heck we even got a few ones in here

I know what you are saying, but is that SP2's fault. I mean when you first install it, it gives you one of those baloon things and you can learn about it. Not only that, your average user is better off with the firewall on anyhow.

While there will always be people who have trouble with simple things on computers, the plain fact is it's SIMPLE to turn off the firewall even if you aren't a computer guru. The CP has been around forever, and if you simply click the firewall icon, it's pretty self explanatory to figure out.

One thing I've learned over the time I've done tech support....

NEVER EVER EVER assume anything. NEVER overestimate the knowledge or IQ of computer users.

But we can all pray that you are right. However, it is still an annoyance to me.

I just need linux to reconigize my new hardware damn it

/me prays Mandrake 10.1 will be the answer to my prayers

God damn, it's been 20 minutes of copying files and the progress bar hasn't moved AT ALL. It's taking longer to install the service pack than it did to install windows in the first place.

Yeah every time I install a major MS update.....I often wonder what's really going on during the process.

Sometimes I feel sorta like violated or something.

Why don't you go to sleep and check again when you wake up? It would definitely make the time pass faster

Does it give you the option to plug in your laptop before continuing? Of course not, it just deletes all that stuff it spent the last ten minutes decompressing so that you have to do it over again. :|

Is that you FRED?

Im starting to think those who install SP2 and have 'no problems' seriously dont use their PCs for anything demanding.
SP2 has issues with VPN for a start.

known issue on laptops, it slows down office apps from what i remember from slashdot

Watch yourself. If you use Windows Update with XP SP2 and keep ignoring the nag-dialog to reboot, Windows will reboot for you at 3:00am (the time auto-updates runs) and kill any open app. Unsaved data or not.

yes, the installer is stupid. the firewall is completely useless (while asking if you want the program to continue, it's loading and doing it's thing in the background). and yes, a slipstreamed install is oh so much nicer :)

and finally, yes, people are f'in morons when it comes to computers, what is simple to you, is 1million times harder for "average folk"

I hate that service pack... 1 out of every TWO computers I install it on, has problems getting network/internet access after the install.

the NIC picks up an IP, but you can't do F all... you have to uninstall SP2 to get it to work, I have seen a few cases on groups, but no responses or fixes so far yet. So a lot of PC's around here with XP are still on SP1.

I would definiately NOT recommend SP2 to ANYONE.

Sure it gets rid of a bunch of security holes..but knowning microsoft, probably opens up more!

Also, with the stupid firewall thingy, you can't use programs that use ports. Unless you unblock or turn it off, but not everyone knows about it

I'm using Linux as my firewall, don't need no POS windows firewall.

Some less technical users would probably find SP2 a gift from hell if they don't know how to turn off a few things

LMAO. Firewall --> disable. Done.

OMGIT'SMSMUSTBECRAPAIEIIEIIEEEE!!!!!

Yeah except for those who don't know sh!t about computers, it might not be completely obvious to them. duh.

goddamm... how many braincells does it take to read the installation screen that asks if you want to turn the firewall on or off???

fvck.. even AOL users can do that...

At least the installer checked that. What idiot installs any updates on battery power... (ok I may have done some myself ;) ) yeah it's possible to do but seems pretty reckless and then when the power fails and your whole OS is toast you'd be complaining why did MS let me install on battery power.

OK, so, yeah, it could have let the install continue after you plugged in and the whole SP2 installer has failed for me 3 out of 4 PC's now (requiring repair installs and such to fix things it broke) but otherwise once it's installed it's been rock solid.

Two essential steps after installing SP2:

START-RUN-SERVICES.MSC

Goto Security Center. Stop the service and set to DISABLED.
Goto Windows Firewall. Stop the service and set to DISABLED.

Problem solved. :)

Big variable in setup times. I've seen it take as long as 87 minutes to install on a slow ass notebook (P2 333 w/192MB RAM) and as quickly as under two minutes total on a very fast system.

Cheers!
