XP box can't share with W2K??

A friend called and asked if I would help get her network running right, she has 4 machines - one W98SE, one WinME, one W2K and a new one that has Win XP.

The other boxes share with each other just fine, but her XP box doesn't want to play.

She has ICS running on the W2K and all machines (including the WinXP) can get online, web surf & email.

The trouble is that she can't share files & dirs between the Win XP & the Win 2K boxes at all.
What's the procedure to get these two sharing?

She has them set up as a workgroup, not a domain.
They are both members of the same workgroup.

She has tried it both with a static IP like 192.168.0.3 and with DHCP. In both cases she gets internet access but no file sharing between the two.

- Turn off the XP firewall
- Make sure that NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled in TCP/IP properties on all machines.
- If both of these are done and it still doesn't work, install the NETBEUI protocol on all machines.

To correct this problem, create users on the w2k and xp computers that are being used on the win98 and me computers. I had the exact same problem and this fixed it.

Good luck

I also have XP here, so I looked in TCP/IP properties and there is no option there for enabling NETBIOS.
I looked in Install -> Protocols and there was one for IPX/SPX/NETBIOS available.
That being said sharing of anything & everything works here on my own network without it.

She can't see shared drives between her XP & 2K machine, but she can see shared drives on her ME & 98 machines from either the XP or the 2K machines.

The 2K machine has a user added that is the logged in user on the XP box, but I don't think she has a user on the XP box that is the 2K logged in user. I could ask her to try adding her login to the XP box & see if that does it.

1. Can you ping the other PC with the host name? With the IP address?

2. Are you running a software firewall such as ZoneAlarm? If so, stop the firewall (and make sure TrueVector isn't running as a service), or add a trusted IP or IP range to the firewall for the internal network on each of the PCs running the firewall.

3. Can you manually map a drive from the XP machine to the W2K, or vica versa? When you do, try using an account that has admin rights. (The "Connect Using a Different User Name" option)

4. Check the Security properties of the Share, AND check the Security properties of the folder, if running NTFS on both the XP and W2K machines.

You have to add it : Network Connections>Install>Protocol>NETBEUI
__________________________________________________________

When I look there I don't see that as an option - NEBEUI just simply isn't there.

netbios and netbeui are two totally different things. xp home doesn't have it visible, but it's easily accessable from xp pro. there is an faq about it in the AT faq's for the location of netbeui on the xp home cd.

Does he need NetBEUI? Should just need TCP/IP and NETBIOS right? I've got XP and 2K boxes and I had a Win98SE machine a while back. I could "see" shares on the XP machine from the Win98 machine and I didn't have NetBEUI installed. Since you've got connectivity between them it sounds like a permissions issue. I had all of the boxes logged in under the same username/password and made sure that login was in the administrator group on the 2K/XP machines. When you attempt to map a drive are you prompted for username/password?

nope, he doesn't "need" netbuei, I pm'd him to help him configure shareing over tcp/ip on a mixed windows network, all he needs to do is search for the computer names and map the shared drives.

While you don't "need" NETBEUI for file & print sharing, it frequently solves workgroup browsing issues. The fragile workgroup browser election scheme that Microsoft cooked up for Windows frequently throws up it's hands and quits resolving names. NETBEUI periodically broadcasts the client name, and solves the name resolution issue.

BTW, I saw a reference to NETBIOS over TCP/IP not being available in some versions of XP, this is false. I checked both an XP-Home and XP-Pro machine, and under TCP/IP properties, Advanced, WINS, the option exists.

Just in case you need netbeui, you need to install it using the windows xp CD. It's not installed w/ the OS by default.

I sent her some of these suggestions, I'll report on any success or failure when I get the reply.
Thanks!

Ok, I have gotten her to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and add her 2K user name in to the XP machine as an admin and the XP user in to the 2K machine etc...

She then tries accessing the workgroup and gets this error:

Workgroup is not accessable
You might not have permission to use this resource
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission
The server is not configured for transactions

Make sure the server service is started and enabled. If it is not then that is most likely your problem.

Okay since the server service is running, go to the command prompt and type net share. Make sure there is a IPC$ showing. If not, type net start IPC$ and see if you can connect to it after that.

You might have her check to make sure the Guest account is enabled on the W2K box.
