I voted Sirius. I listen to their online broadcasts at work quite a bit and they fit my tastes.

I've heard that Sirius is planning on releasing satellite video in the future - does anybody know more about this? (I would be able to live in my car if I could get some news and movie channels!)

XM. More subscribers.

That's what you're basing your decision on?

Cheaper. Also, the HU I have supports XM radio, so I went that way. When I bought it, I wasnt planning on sat radio, but then I decided I wanted it. XM was the only logical choice.

Stern said this morning Sirius is where he will go if he goes to sattelite radio. I highly doubt he would choose XM with ClearChannel.

This will make me choose Sirius.

If we are talking hardware... check out this: Hardware Feature comparison

Available PNP and car receivers: Audiovox PNP2 , JVC, Kenwood, PanaPacific(larger, designed for truckers), Clarion (check crutchfield to verify these)

An example of Sirius Datacasting, Kenwood Home unit

I think Sirius has the hardware down and it continously adds more manufacturers to the list. I myself have the Audiovox PNP2.

you have to take in to account how the XM/Sirius tuner broadcasts. Hooking directly to the unit using AUX inputs or the like is the best, after that is hooking up through an RF modulator (crappy), and then wireless fm (even crappier).

Stern would be the only reason I would actually pay for radio. Can you record stuff off Sirius and burn to a cd?

Internet radio will destroy them both once WiFi is available everywhere.

Pretty soon headunits will support Shoutcast streams.. and no one will need to pay for satelite radio again.

I voted for XM and love my Delphi Skyfi unit alot. XM comedy is propbably what keeps me.

I have no problem switching to sirius if the programming is better.

Yup, I've hooked mine up using line-in to my computer. Can record anything I want.

Aint happening anytime soon. Problem with internet radio is that it is not organized, or easy to use while on the road (no turning a dial with a tuner). Also, you have too many dependencies, like network bandwidth and fading signal quality etc, which do not exist with satellite radio. Plus, you cant control quality. Also have issues like listeing in remote places, like mountains, which is possible with satellite, but would have to dot the landscapre with repeaters for WiFi.

I can guarantee you, that if any company came up with a product, another one will come up and charge you to pay for quality content.... it will end up like regular FM, the free channels will switch to ads and the quality stuff will be pay...

If the market exists, someone will figure out a way to make people pay for it.

Sirius has comedy too, a toned down without the swearing and another that is no holds barred.

Newer cell phones already support Shoutcast streams.

Can't be too far in the future.

Yes, but you realize the implementation of that technology is not as easy as satellite. A company would have to build Wifi hotspots everywhere like a cell phone network. Then you have the security issues to deal with, and if T-mobile is charging you to use their WiFi, you are going to end up paying regardless. no one is going to do it for free. You could bounce off unsecured Wifi, but then thats not going to be available when you are driving around.

My point is, sure it could exiist, but by then satellite radio will have grown much bigger, and the risk of any company wanting to promote WiFi in a car for audio, will be that much higher. It is just far more convenient to throw a couple of satellites up in space and broadcast all over the US, Mexico and canada.

From what I've heard, SIRIUS is seriously better.

Wow...never thought I'd agree with you on any topic, but Sirius is stretching out at a good pace (plus XM is 30% ClearChannel  son's of biotches)

CC has ~4.6% in XM and they don't have any control of them. GM and Honda has the largest holding in XM ~15%.

Xm has a largesr playlist than Sirius and their hardware is 1 generation ahead of Sirius. Go and compare the hardware at BB or CC, sirius components are a lot bigger than XM.

XM has their 3rd gen products coming out ~2nd qrt this year and Siris is still on their first gen.

FYI

Damn this isnt helping. Guess I will have to just check this stuff out myself. But I am tending to lean more towards sirius cause I heard they had better electronic music stations. Any body care to commment on that?

If Stern ends up on Sirius, and even a small fraction of his fan base buys radios (I know I would, and he has some seriously loyal fans), their installation base will instantly go through the roof. He has several million listeners (radio's Arbitron ratings system is pretty hinky and unreliable, but 18 million is the number that has been thrown around for years).

None of the above. Both will be bankrupt in 5 years.

People pay for TV, why not radio? Makes sense to me.

There was a time when people couldn't believe anyone would pay for TV, either. I would definitely pay $10/mo if that's what it takes to get my Stern fix.
