Is there any way to get Xbox live working with a wireless ethernet connection? Like if I get a Wireless Access Point and use a patch cable to hook it up to the Xbox? I don't want to have to route 100ft of Cat5 through my attic. :(

Yes...Tripleshot and I discussed such a setup via PM just the other day.
Using APs that support client mode is more cost-effective than buying the dedicated WiFi-Ethernet bridges in most cases.

BTW: KIM that officially, MS says that XBL does not support connections over WiFi. So if you run into problems, expect no t-shooting from MS. Just a heads-up.

But arent bridges really expensive...like $100 or so. How would it work using an AP...since many of those go on sale for like $50 or less...

The thing is that you don't move your xbox all too often, and it just defeats the purpose of having WIFI for it. I use WIFI for my laptop but normal wires for all my other machines. Connections are still after with ethernet cables.

I know...the concern isnt moving it. The problem is that the XBox is in my room. However, my cable modem is in my parent's room (where the cable line comes in). I don't want to run the wire across our rooms, 'cause people trip on them and even if you run it along the door frame and all that fancy stuff, it looks ugly.

I know the bridge will work, but is there a way to use an Access Point. Mebbe keep a wireless router in my room and plug it into the XBox and have it configured as an AP with the wireless router in my parent's room actually doing the routing.

Any help? Thanx.

I highly recommend the D-Link 900AP+ ... I'm currently using it in combination with my D-Link DI-614+ and they work great together. The 900AP+ has the ability to act as a wireless access point, as a point-to-point bridge with another access point, as a point-to-multi-point wireless bridge, as a wireless client, or as a wireless repeater... the wireless repeater mode only works with certain D-Link products (DI-614+ is one of them). The price of the 900AP+ is around $100, similar to what you'd spend on the DWL-810 or the DWL-810+ ... And like the DWL-810+ it supports the enhanced 22Mbps 802.11b+ (which is also supposedly compatible at 22Mbps with 802.11g). The only bad thing about the 900AP+ is that you need to configure it a bit more than you would with the DWL-810+ (DWL-810+ is supposed to be more plug-and-playable). However, since the 900AP+ has 5 different functions you could end up utilizing it for another reason should you decide not to continue using Xbox Live.. (WAP, repeater, whatever).

Here's a link to the AP from Amazon.com: Link - Only $76.64 after MIR!

Sounds like it will work but have you considered the bottleneck of the wifi connection? I don't know if you need the full 100mbps of an ethernet connection, but it could possibly create lag in your gaming.

WiFi is 11mbps with realistic average throughput of 2-4mpbs.

Dunno about you, but I'd be hard pressed to find a broadband connection that gives you THAT kind of bandwidth...

I've been running at 22Mbps (Real world rates of around 700-800KB/s or roughly 6.4Mbits/sec), and I haven't had any problems playing on Live. Obviously my bottleneck in this case is my Cablemodem which is only 1.5Mbps/192Kbps ... But ping times added on to the connection due to using wireless is in the range of 2-5ms (~2ms being the norm) which is pretty good and shouldn't really effect your gaming... (I play MechAssault all the time with no noticeable lag problems).

My xbox has been wireless from day one.

It will never max out your bandwith unless you host a large game.

Your internet connection's bandwith will max out before the wireless bridge will.

I have not have any issues at all with the lindsy set up and it was my first network.
