If that's what you think, fine. But let's not kid ourselves, it's $3.35 a month. As a gaming service, it is markedly and quanitifiably better than PSN for gaming.

Whether that's worth the whopping $3 a month or not to whomever is a personal choice, but let's not kid ourselves and pretend all things are equal and one just costs more; they're not.
Let em go.. they enjoy the crap service Sony has, between CONSTANT updates and them losing everyone's CC data to hackers I can see the appeal too ;)

Is xbox live a better service than PSN? I think so. I have sold my ps3 and I still have and use my xbox 360 regularly. That said, I still think $3 a month is too much to spend for what value I get out of xbox live.

I rarely play games that require online gameplay. For me xbox live was a quick way to talk to friends while gaming (I could just use my phone I guess), downloading DLC (can still do that for free with silver account) and to watch UFC fights, netflix etc (which can all be done for free on my TV now via apps or via my roku box I use on my upstairs TV).

There is just no value in xbox live for me. It is a better service than what sony offers, but that doesn't instantly give it value.

Because the Red Box kiosks near us have movies from the last three years, unlike streaming Netflix, so its got that going for it.
I subscribe to Netflix for the tv shows I haven't seen, but the movie selection is miserable, so anything would be an upgrade.

What does the RedBox kiosk have to do with streaming?

Whether xbox live gold is worth its cost for the gaming aspect, or not;

its stupid to require it to have access to a paid service like Netflix.

To all the people crying about paying for Live to use netflix, how many use your phones or tablets for netflix? Dont you pay for a data plan ontop of your phone plan? its the same thing and for me my data plan is 30 a month compared to the 35-60ish a year for live. I dont understand why this always comes up. YOU DONT HAVE TO USE A 360 FOR NETFLIX! Many dvd/bluray/TVs not come with it. This arrguement is so annoying.

Now back on topic. This sounds like it might be good to have. I do like using redbox for quick rentals and there are plenty of them where I live and if the streaming comes around I might try it out.

xbox live isn't the same as a data plan. A data plan is comparable to an isp, its how you connect to the internet.

xbox live gold adds absolutely nothing of value to Netflix. The difference between silver and Gold is the ability to play mutliplayer online games, which has nothing to do with a service like Netflix.

Of course xbox live gold for gaming is also an outrageous rip-off, its nothing but a tollgate to prevent the exchange of packets over the internet, which is what actually makes online gaming possible.

How? Even at the full price of 60.00 a year its a whole 5.00 month. Holy crap that is such a rip-off! A whole 5 dollars a month to use their product!

You wanna go there? What about the ISP you have to pay in order to use that XBox Live you just paid for in order to use that Netflix you paid for?

"Exclusive" shit sucks, plain and simple. Paywalled exclusive shit is even shittier.

You get what you pay for. I enjoy having party and private chat, and that feature alone is worth a few bucks a month, especially since they don't have it on the PS3. And as much as I use my xbox, I don't have a hard time paying $3 a month for gold.

Now, back on topic, I am guessing that the instant is going to blow as badly as Netflix, so it isn't something I will use.

We should also be mad at car companies for making us pay extra for the fuel to run them. Dont they know that that should come with it when we pay for it.

Maybe everything in the world should just be free and we wouldnt have this problem of paying people/companies for their product.

Paying for xbox live is like paying for a computer, then internet, paying a netflix subscription, then opening your browser going to netflix and microsoft telling you that you need to pay extra for online content.

It doesn't fly on your PC, your phone, your TV, or any other computer enabled device. Why is the xbox special?

Because people will pay for it.

But who out there is buying an xbox just for netflix? Nobody! Most people who buy an xbox do so to play online and therefore I am not paying extra JUST to use netflix. I am paying to play online and use Live.

If people want to pay for xbox live that's fine with me.

My point is to explain what they are actually paying for though. Some people think that Microsoft is providing some kind of service that is the technology that is online gaming on the xbox.

That's not true though. online gaming on the xbox works the same way it does on a ps3 or on some pc games. peer to peer connections.

What xbox live does is PREVENT the games from connecting unless a toll is paid to MS.

Other than that all it is is a combo of itunes, skype, and Facebook, all geared towards gaming, all supported by advertisiing and game sales.

What is different is almost all services of this type don't have an annual fee, but MS has managed to obscure what their service really is and therefore gamers think the cost is justified because they think MS is in using the money to make online gaming possible. Which is false.

i think most people know what they are paying for - xbox live. it's a service that is much more integrated into the platform than psn is. it's also much more reliable than psn is.

whether the $3/mo i give to them to access xbox live is the reason for this, i don't really care. all i know is that it is a superior service to any other online gaming i've done on consoles and for the cost of 2 sodas a month, i will gladly pay it.

I agree with Tom. If I understand correctly, not every xbox user (to my knowledge) needs to use xbox live and some of those users want to use netflix (and now Redbox) without having to pay an extra fee. Granted xbox live gold may be $35-50/yr, why should someone have to pay that cost/yr just to be able to use a service they've already paid for. Sony wins in that regard but just barely.

Keep in mind some people have an xbox simply to use as a WMC extender, should those people also pay for xbox live to use Netflix/Redbox Instant even though they dont plan on using live? Not everyone has a smart TV/Blu-ray player that has these apps. What if someone is using an xbox simply for local play and dont care for online gaming?

I haven't started my Redbox Instant trial yet but sucks that there isn't an app available for the PS3.

-Speaking as a PS3 owner so I may not know all the facts. Sony's policy of mandating a user to access PSN in order to use Netflix/Amazon Instant Video, etc. isn't much better imho.
