Xbox 360 price cut/new processor?

Kabob

Lifer
I recently heard that Microsoft was planning on cutting the price of the Xbox 360 console. Anyone know if/when this is happening and how much they are going to cut it?

Also, several months ago I heard on Gamespot that Microsoft was planning on releasing a processor that ran at a much cooler temperature for the Xbox 360. Anyone know if/when this is going to be released?

It has been rumored that Microsoft has negotiated lower production costs for the Xbox 360, along with the move to 65nm processors, which will make the Xbox 360 cheaper for them. At the same time, people have been saying that because of these occurences that a Xbox 360 price drop may occur, but it has been staunchly denied by Microsoft.

And they'll continue to deny it until they actually do it.

It may just be die shrink to save some costs on 65nm.

The only way Microsoft will drop the price on the 360 before holiday 2007 is if Sony is just kicking them in the ass, or if sales stagnate over this coming holiday season. I don't see either happening due to stock of PS3 units.

I concur!

Hmmm...if the price cut is significant, that might piss off my fiance' who just bought me a 360 premium bundle for an early b-day present from Costco.

...but then again, it is Costco....bleh, I'd be hard pressed to believe a price drop for more than $50 anyway, not a big deal.

What if the Wii is kicking the 360's ass?

I've read about the move to 65nm, which of course helps with heat. As for a price cut..... i don't see it happening before Christmas. Time will tell though.

I don't believe Microsoft even looks at the Wii as direct competition. Besides, they are both directing at two different types of markets. Do you even view the Wii as a traditional console?? I sure don't.

I'll just add that I have no expertise in the field of console marketing, so anything I post is purely based on my thoughts only 🙂.

The Wii is definitely in a different demographic than the 360 or the PS3. Hrm...I was hopin for a 360 price cut though, I'd actually consider investing in one if the core system was around $200.

Maybe you're confusing the Wii with the GameCube? Nintendo is going after older, more mature gamers this time around in addition to a broader group. It will have many of the same games and same types of games as the Xbox 360 and PS3. Because of that alone I don't see how anyone can say they are not direct competitors.

I doubt we'll see a price cut. MS is still losing money on every 360 sold. They won't reduce the price until they reduce the cost unless they start getting their rears handed to them by the Wii or PS3.

I'd say the exact opposite. Wii (in my mind) targets a younger audience. Don't get me wrong, there's something to be offered to all, but on average a little kid isn't going to know how to memorize 37 buttons on a controller to figure out what makes his character jump. He's going to point the controller and swing it around. At least that's how I see it in my mind...

Honestly though while I think that the Wii is the most interesting and unique system out there and probably the most entertaining (IMHO); I think it's going to sell the fewest systems simply because we as americans want the biggest baddest system we can have for the buck. Hardware wise there is no comparison between the Wii and the 360/PS3. While I think it's stupid as the Wii will offer alot more I think that it's just not going to do terribly well. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

Well, we'll see. I really don't think the Wii is targeting kids considering all of the ads show adults playing the games, not kids. Either way, I think it's stupid to say they're not competing with the 360 and the PS3 just because they're taking a different approach. Apparantly Sony saw the Wii as competition or they wouldn't have rushed to add motion-sensing to the PS3 controller.

The only hurdle Nintendo has to overcome to do well with the Wii is the stigma it has as a developer of games for kids. The biggest hurdle Sony has to overcome is sticker shock.

Older and more mature gamers.. pfft. those older and mature gamers are the ones that can afford the nice toys and the HDTVs to run them..

those older and mature gamers will buy the wii for thier kiddies to play on thier regular TVs in thier bedrooms to keep thier hands off the real hardware that kids have no business touching.

wii= a toy..

PS3 with LINUX (see press release today)
360 With MCE or Vista Ultimate.. and HD DVD definatly for adults

Similar to my train of thought. They've got 2 system's worth of kiddie imagery to fight through and the majority of "mature" players (if you want to call it that) are going to spend their hard earned cash on the "wow" factor systems, not the "well isn't that nifty" system.

And here I thought we were talking about video games 😀

Me too. Guess we did get sorta off topic.

So I guess the question was not really answered though. No one knows for sure about either question, but lots of reinforced speculation.

well thats the ah heck isnt it... these consoles arent just games anymore...
thats a MAJOR selling point to alot of geeks...
me I use the MCE extender way more than I use my 360 for gaming... and was the major reason I wanted it..

and this LINUX announcement today is also very intriguing...
would add alot more functions to the PS3... making it almost worth that 600 bucks..

Well the answer to your first question is that Microsoft has not announced a price cut and will not announce a price cut until they're actually going to do the price cut because their sales will drop if people know the price will drop by $50 in x weeks. But when a price cut does come, I think $50 is the most you can hope for.

I don't know the answer to your second question.

The answer to the second question is that the die shrink is supposed to take place in the first half of next year. Exactly when, nobody knows.

As long as it's cheaper than PS3, it'll be status quo

Even before the XBOX 360 launched last year, Microsoft openly stated that it planned to reduce the price of its newest console on a yearly basis. Now, a year later, some gamers are waiting for that forecasted price-cut, despite constant denials.
Rumors of a price drop recently surfaced on the ?Net, perhaps fueled by consumer expectations of a reaction to competition, and by a DigiTimes story claiming that a $100 drop would be possible. DigiTimes cites sources stating that Microsoft ?has negotiated reduced production costs for the XBOX 360 with Taiwan-based manufacturing partners? and ?total production cost can be reduced by 15-20% due to diminishing costs for most components along with increasing production scales and decreasing defect rates.?

It?s no secret that Microsoft will be giving its chips a die-shrink from 90nm to 65nm to reduce costs and combat heat issues. The change in process, however, isn?t going to happen until 2007.

In the end, it?s all up to Microsoft to decide cut-or-no-cut. At the recent X06 event in Spain, Microsoft?s Peter Moore responded to the question of pending price drops with a succinct ?Certainly not.? Microsoft?s explanation is that it still believes that the XBOX 360 offers great value to the consumer, which likely means that it is perfectly happy to sit right between Wii and PlayStation 3.

While the price of XBOX 360 may remain unchanged, bundling options are still wide-open. Some XBOX 360s currently come packed with a game and some Live goodies at no extra cost, and bundles could improve as the holiday season approaches.

Some have speculated that, instead of a price drop, Microsoft will include the HD-DVD add-on in the XBOX 360 Premium bundle to match up with PlayStation 3?s Blu-ray ability. Seeing as how Microsoft says no to a $100 price drop, it seems unlikely that a $200 accessory be included for free. But if it were so, wouldn?t that really throw a wrench into Sony?s plans.
