I like the Xbox Live Silver deal - it's also a good idea for MS. Previously, you needed to be a subscriber to download extra content for games. Now, they'll generate a little cash from people who aren't subscribers but want the pay-content anyway.

It's also nice because while I don't game online with my xbox, it'd be nice to be able to get Roster updates without paying for an annual live subscription.

And DVD Playback was a factor for PS2 selling better. Might have been a small factor, but it was one never the less. I know at least 2 people who bought a PS2 because they felt they were killing two birds with one stone by getting a console and DVD Player combined. I almost jumped on the bandwagon myself....but I just bought a DVD Player instead.

Yeah, you have to realize that when the PS2 launched, DVD players weren't all that prevalent and were still fairly expensive. That might have been the holiday season they broke the $100 barrier. My parents had one in the spring of 2000 and they paid at least $200 for it, the PS2 launched that fall, didn't it?

The same thing will probably happen with the PS3 and Blue-Ray DVD players. You'll have the choice between just getting a ~$100-200 blue-ray player or spending another $100-200 and getting a PS3 as well. A lot of people could justify it that way.
 
Bulls@#$ It took the Xbox months after it was released before it could play dvd's. The PS2 could do it out of the box. DVD players cost hundreds of dollars back then. You clearly didn't belong to any stereo related forums if you believe that.

WTF are you talking about? I have the first release XBox (got it on Nov of 2001) and I could definitely play DVDs. The only bullsh!t around here is what's coming out of your mouth. Get your facts straight.
 
Seriously, if you look at analyst reflections on the PS2, the DVD compenent was not really a factor. It didn't spur on sales as much as you would think. It simply didn't make a difference in the DVD market.

The whole BluRay might make a difference in 2 or 3 years, but not immediately. HD-TVs just haven't penetrated enough of the market. But, that may change in the coming years and certainly be a factor towards the last year or two of this generation's offerings.
 
I haven't bought a console in about 15 years, but i'm definitely getting these next gen consoles (and a plasma or LCD TV to go with them).

That says nothing about backwards compatibility. That only says that Xbox can play with Xbox2 across their network.

You can browse Mac drives with a PC and vice versa over a network, but the two systems definitely are not compatible with each other. All that means is that they both use the same networking technology and the information the application sends out is readable by both systems.

How many developers would cross develop the same game for a dying/dead platform? Especially one for XBox Live. Every major gaming site picked up on this as hinting/verifying at backwards compatibility. It doesn't guarantee it, but I'll put my money and my bets (like I said earlier) that it will have b.w. compatibility. With the specs listed, it's more than capable of running even software emulation. I'm not going to argue day and night over a topic neither of us can prove, so we'll wait a few days to see if it is in fact true or not.

The Super Nintendo came out in 1990, yet game developers kept making games for the NES for another 4 years.

I'm not saying that the Xbox2 won't have backwards compatibility, I'm just saying that the passage that you quoted doesn't really tell us anything about it.

I agree that it will have more than enough power to emulate the Xbox1 games.

Not so. I think PC gaming will only benefit from this as now the cross platform games (console to PC) won't be as hardware restricted as before.

Hell, has anyone seen the new Unreal yet? PC only as far as I know.

Microsoft licensed the Unreal engine for all upcoming Microsoft Game Studio Games. So Xbox 360 games will look good for about a year.

Yeah I can't wait!! It it has backwards compatibility, I'll buy it right away. Thats the biggest thing for me. If it doesn't, I'll still get it but only after the price drops a bit, and there are some known "must have" games out there.

And if it is backwards compatible, I can finally mod the old Xbox and put my emulation stuff on there. I've been wanting to do that forever, just didn't really want to mess with my only box.

You should look into softmodding unless you use LIVE a lot. All software and no need to open the box up. Takes 10-20 minutes, most of which is backing up your current HD via FTP.

What happened is, who cares? As I've thought for a while B-Ray and HDDVD are technologies that nobody needs/wants right now. Practically speaking they offer nothing over DVD. What are we going to do with a 20 gig disk or 30 gigs or whatever? Waste of time right now. DVD is much cheaper. You can't even rent a BR movie or anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if PS3 dropped it as well. It's really right now a useless technology, and will be for years to come. People are on the DVD bandwagon now. See how long cassettes and vhs and all that went. Blu-ray hasn't even begun, so if you see how long it took DVD to kick in properly you'll see that xbox is missing nothing by not incorporating blue laser into their next box.

This thing looks good but I've seen enough launch systems now to know that they invariably have a pathetic number of launch games...so it's best to wait _at least_ six months before buying one. Plus you can then save on some of the inevitable initial quality problems.

FWIW I question whether it's going to have that triple core setup. Sounds exhorbitantly expensive for anything coming out this year.
A recent article scoffed that the difference between PS2 and PS3 makes xbox360 look like its not even a real upgrade.

I was one of them. It was a major factor for me.

They could, but they'd be wrong to. The reason is that when the PS2 came out you're right, a lot of people didn't have dvd players, but dvds were clearly here to stay and had been growing nicely. I remember the first store near me renting them fully two years prior to the PS2 coming out. Unlike laserdisc it was plainly evident that DVD was the next format. I'll be VERY surprised if we see any blue-ray or HD-dvd rentals up through the end of 2006, except in maybe a demo capacity; two-three discs at blockbuster just to pretend they have it. Nobody outside of tech circles cares about--or indeed has even heard of blue-ray/hddvd.

 
Skoorb - BluRay offers HD movies on disc. You're right that it's not a big deal at this moment. HD sets just haven't penetrated enough. Give it 2 or 3 more years and BluRay will be the primary source with DVDs also still selling well. Those that can afford HD sets now are going to want a BluRay player so that they can make use of their nice TVs and watch videos in 720/1080.

Mine sure will not be unless we figure out how to mod the 360. I spend a few hours yesterday playing SNES games. Makes a great box to play the games I grew up with. Mario Bros 1 never gets old.

When they release a game for a console that I wish they'd release on pc and, more importantly, would actually work on the pc (ie beatemups dont work on pc...) maybe then i'll switch. But that said, consoles are thus far a poor platform for certain game types, namely strategy (a huge genre, turn based and real time) and, imo, fps.

Maybe this will change but i'll believe it when i see it. So far the two platforms cater to quite different gaming needs.

Not to mention piracy for PC games. If I was a developer and had to choose one of the platforms to send my game to, it'd be a console always, just because I know that it won't be easy to pirate.

Yes I know it's easy to pirate games if you have a modded xbox/whatever, but it doesn't come that way out of the box.
