yeah big talk, but I mean unless you're insanely hardcore and don't have a life, it won't be much of an improvement. I mean online gaming is online gaming. Voice chat is even too much for me. The moment I can't play online in my undies b/c of video chat is the moment I quit online gaming. I don't LIKE personal. I want a alias name and nothing more, but that's just me.

To address this, I think MS is really focusing on XBOX Live and wrapping everything up into a really personable experience. I think the next-gen of consoles will be an expansion into an online community. It's actually pretty amazing what they are working on. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has friends across the countryand will finally be able to play and interact with them just like there in the same room.

I don't think the first generation of games for the Xbox360 will come close to using the power of the Xbox360....which may actually be bad marketing wise initially. I'm reading over the info at TeamXbox and it definitely is going to be a beast. It's going to take developers a while to take full advantage of the three PowerPC cores, the graphics processor with 10mb of embedded RAM, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM.

The specs for the Xbox360 look much more impressive over how the Xbox looked compared to PC hardware out at the time.

Queasy - No doubt it's going to be awhile until the big picture becomes a reality (if ever). It's going to be a year or 2 until the entire infrastructure is put to full use. But, I think that's what part of the "next-gen" is this go around. Graphics can only be so good because software is quite frankly ahead of hardware in most respects (maybe because we just can't improve software alogrithms as quickly as hardware). There's a great foundation here from what they are saying, and they happen to have an extemely impressive machine powering it.

I'm real interested to see Sony's take on next-gen. MS is making it very obvious their priority is an online community. Can't wait till E3 next week.

Having what and a HD-DVD player?

The HD-DVD player was only announced a couple of days ago. So who knows at this point.

Give it about a half hour for the upload to finish, I have to run to the store but I'll let it continue. Beware that the quality is very crappy. Very very crappy.

When the size reaches 32MB you'll know it's done.

sweet, nice speed I got too

The only thing that scares me about the new Xbox is the water cooled CPU. They better hope they don't have faulty components.

Oh, it looks like a 20GB upgradeable hard drive will come standard. So, there won't be two versions of the Xbox sold. This bodes well for possible backwards compatiblity.

Looking at the specs, this thing is definitely gonna be a monster. Nothing on the PC will probably even come close until we have someting like a G70 in SLI and some quad-core cpu. And maybe not even then, unless they start putting vector units into PC's. Remember, these vector units is what gives the PS2 a lot of it's power, and I'm not sure if any single-core cpu today can even match that (~6.4 mflops... ).

Anyway, I'm waiting until the PS3 comes out, I have a feeling I'm going to like it more than the Xbox360. Anyone got any leaked specs for that one?

By water cooled, it's likely a heat pipe which is a closed circuit design. You can buy that kind of heatsink now, and has been in use in some laptops. Certainly not water cooled the way we think of it.

It was never really announced that it would have an HD-DVD player. The article linked only said this:

"Sony is already planning to integrate Blu-ray into the Playstation 3, while Microsoft is expected to announce this week that HD DVD will be a non-exclusive component of the upcoming Xbox 360."

Anyway, I'm hoping it will, but frankly, I don't see how Microsoft doesn't lose $500 per console as it is with a water cooled, three 3.2 Ghz core processor, never mind an HD-DVD player.

Did backwards compatibility get confirmed or denied with all this new information?

Not really. However, it appears in the OurColony video that they are playing Halo2 and some racing game from XBOX on the new 360.

The only thing about it from the video is that I don't think it was clear if they were playing Halo 2 on the 360, or were they playing Halo 2 on the original XBox. I never saw a clear cut sign that it was the 360 they were playing on.
