Depends. How big is it? If 27" or bigger, I'd say go for it.Originally posted by: batmang

call me blind but i was in best buy the other day, and they had a HDDVD player set up and playing, and it really didn't look that impressive. Maybe it was a crappy TV.
I'm a huge Firefly fan, so maybe. But I still want at least one of the above titles before I pull the trigger.Originally posted by: HeroOfPellinor

Not to hijack this thread but how is the signal quality of the 1080i coming from a HDDVD player compared to a 1080i OTA signal? Also consider that the output from the HDDVD player is component or HDMI.
I don't have a HDDVD or BR player so I can't make the comparison but I did see Men In Black 2 in 1080i OTA and it was fanfvckintastic.
According to people who have the Toshiba players, 1080i OTA MPEG2 is very good, but HD DVD VC-1 beats it easily on a large TV.Originally posted by: jtvang125

Actually, Toshiba is PAYING BB to put up those displays. I saw one myself and it was OK, but not overwhelmingly good. Why? The TV was OK, but was on the small side, and the material they chose wasn't always the best. eg. Batman Begins looked great but some of the other previews were merely good. Furthermore, it didn't seem like the TV was properly calibrated.Originally posted by: GTaudiophileHAHA! BB is in Sony's pocket. Meaning, only the Blu-Ray players are getting the HDMI cable hookup to 1080P HDTVs while the HD-DVD players get composite or s-video hookup to sleek-looking 480P EDTVs!Originally posted by: Elderly Newt

Actually it will decode TrueHD. However, it reencodes it to DD 5.1 for output.Originally posted by: PaulNEPats
Warning- if you have a good HT setup, you may want to go for a standalone player. This won't decode TrueHD. You also want to make sure you have a VGA connection on your TV for upconversion of Standard DVDs.
