Warning- if you have a good HT setup, you may want to go for a standalone player. This won't decode TrueHD. You also want to make sure you have a VGA connection on your TV for upconversion of Standard DVDs.
Actually it will decode TrueHD. However, it reencodes it to DD 5.1 for output.

Personally, I don't care that much. I have DVD Audio on my system with 5.1 analogue channels, and I basically never use it.

I'd rather save a few hundred bux than get a (slower) standalone player.

The toshiba hd-a1 is going for around 310-320 on ebay, which is definitely worth it.

man all this 720i 1080i HDTV stuff is so over my head

brazil is so far back in this department its not even funny
It's 720p (progressive), 1080i (interlaced), and 1080p (progressive)

Xbox 360 component
720p for games and movies
1080i for movies
1080p for games

Xbox 360 VGA
720p for games and movies
1080p for games and movies

Good price, but the Toshiba is too slow for my tastes.

GameStop had a "GameStop Premium Xbox360 HDMI Cable" on their upcoming releases last week. It was scheduled for 12/1 and cost $79.99!!!! It was pulled but I think this is a sign that MS is planning a HDMI hookup soon. The price threw me for a loop at first but then I realized that the GameStop branded "Premium" component and S-Video cables were way more expensive than their MS branded counter-parts.

Some people ordering the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 from Amazon.com are gonna be p!ssed. King Kong is only going to be included in the first allocation of drives they got. They've already sold out 2 or 3 allocations before the drive even launched, so those in the later waves of orders are out of luck for the free HD DVD.

Mind you, Amazon.com never advertised King Kong would ship with those later orders.

The HD DVD drive now "Ships in 2 to 4 days" from Amazon.com, and is the #5 seller there. #1 is Gears of War for the Xbox 360. (In contrast, the #1 seller for the PS3 isn't even in the top 400.)

EB Games (which is owned by GameStop) is saying that the official launch date in Canada for them is Nov. 12, which is strange because that is a Sunday. I suspect they'll have them by Friday, so why they're waiting until Sunday is beyond me. 🙁

OTOH, Future Shop and Best Buy in Canada say they may start selling them by Nov. 10-11 if they get them.

My preference is to get it by Nov. 11, so I can watch some movies on the w/e. I'm gonna be hassling my local EB Games on a regular basis in the next few days... 😉

I have around 15 HD-DVDs so far. If you want to see good PQ, check out V for Vendetta, Pitch Black (must have), Fast and the Furious (Tokyo Drift especially), Training Day, and Batman Begins as a few.

Any word on using this on a PC?

Windows XP recognizes the hardware but doesn't install any drivers. Some have gotten it to work with Vista, though.

Arggh... It wasn't released until yesterday in Canada, and stores haven't gotten it in yet. 🙁 If they don't get them today, I'm looking at Monday. 🙁

It's even worse considering I have 5 HD DVD movies sitting here that I can't watch.

There's a $40 off electronics coupon for Circuity City B&M Floating around that knocks the price down on the Xbox Player to $159
