Xbox 360: Got the Red Ring of Death

Never had any problems whatsoever with it up until this past weekend when it froze during a game of NHL 2k7. I knew it would be downhill from there; I just wasn't sure how long the ride would be.

Not long at all.

I could not get it to boot back up at all that day. It would always hang on the logo screen. A couple times over the course of this past week, I would fire it up to see how it would fair. I never booted it up to a game: just to Xbox Live Marketplace. It would freeze within 5 minutes.

Yesterday I went to turn it on and, of course, it froze. I rebooted it and finally got the official Red Ring of Death: quadrants 1, 3, and 4 were lit indicating a "General Hardware Failure".

What a CROCK.

This thing is literally two weeks outside of the warranty. The system was produced in April, so of course it just falls outside of Microsoft's new anti-class-action-lawsuit initiative where they'll replace any box made in March or prior. So now I'm stuck with a $400 brick.

It's no secret at all that there are MAJOR problems with the reliability of the Xbox 360, regardless of when any particular one was manufactured. No, I did not build an elaborate cooling shrine for my Xbox 360. This is a fscking console for fsck sakes. It's supposed to be simple, straightforward gaming. I took basic measures such as making sure it wasn't in an enclosure and that the power brick was as far away as possible. I know people will tell me as I was asking for it since I didn't buy a mini refrigerator to house it in while in use, but to hell with all that. A stock game console should be reliable and stable enough to thrive in normal operating conditions. These little bastards are dying under far more optimal conditions than people had ever before created for a game console.

Unacceptable.

I'm not going into details, but I'm not going to pay a dime for repair and I'm certainly not going to eat another $400 to replace this... but I will be getting a replacement.

UPDATE 11/04/2006
Yes folks, I got a new 360 and I'm not in PMITAP (sorry ;) ).

And I did it totally legally and totally legit. I'd tell you how, but then you wouldn't be able to continue judging me, so please continue... I'm gonna go play NCAA '07 :p .

If you did it legally, you would have told us.

Or, option B: I don't give a sh|t what you guys think. If I describe what I did as legit, you'll call me a liar. If I tell you something that's not legit, then you'll want me hung for eating babies. The truth of the matter is that the REAL story is pretty uninteresting, but it's lose/lose with you guys, so fsck the lot of you. All that matters to me at this point is that I'll be playing GoW on Tuesday :p .

Some of you wanted to assume the worst and feel all righteous, so I let you. You should be thanking me :p .

UPDATE 12/11/2006

Looks like Microsoft is getting sued: Link

GOOD. This is exactly what happened to my Xbox 360. After this thread had already died, I researched at length the symptoms surrounding my busted console, and given those symptoms and the date it occurred, it was obvious that it was the fall update that killed my system.

Because I don't intend to speak to Microsoft. I don't intend to jump through all the hoops and over all the hurdles just to hopefully get the opportunity to go through the hassle of shipping this brick back to them and then waiting 8 weeks for a refurbished unit.

No thanks... my solution is much easier and will produce immediate results.

They scan the serial numbers on new units when you buy them, so fat chance of pulling a switcheroo.

I know what you plan on doing, and I don't blame you one bit.

Luckily I have the MS warranty and also bought it at costco :)

These things shouldn't die this frequently, and if/when mine does, I'll be pissed off too.

Care to spill the beans? I have a friend who is in the same boat as you. He has been on the phone with Microsoft several times trying to get the outcome he wants. So far no dice.

You know absolutely jack sh!t about the repair / replacement process.

I've been through this twice so far when my console was under warranty. The repair process takes approximately 2 to 2.5 weeks turnaround time from the time you make the call. Also, many people have had excellent luck calling them up to purchase the $30 extended warranty; then call back a few days later to get your repair.

BTW, if you plan on pulling a retail box switcheroo, most stores check to see if the serial number on the box matches up with the console you are returning.

Yep, I seriously doubt you'll be able to pull a fast one like that.

You couldn't give jack sh!t about the repair / replacement process.

Fixed

If this problem wasn't so damn rampant and Microsoft hadn't been so damn careless about it all, then I'd be far more inclined to follow procedure.

"They" meaning "every single outlet that sells Xboxes"? Doubt it.

Not that this is what I'm intending to do, of course.

This is why I'm waiting for the newer, cooler 65mm chips to come out before jumping on the 360/HD-DVD bandwagon :p

Its to be expected that the first consoles produced are going to have problems, first off its non mature hardware.

Secondly, people dont want a console that has a constant high pitched whine going off in the background while its keeping its self cool. I'm sure they'd get just as many complaints about that.

Somehow I doubt your "immediate" solution, since you're being so discreet about it, is legal. Kudos to you. Things don't go the way you want, whine on ATOT and break the law FTW!

Ig-nor-ANT.

1. It's NOT to be expected. If I buy a product, IT SHOULD WORK. Don't be stupid by suggesting that the first X number of customers are just the second round of beta testers. Do you work for EA by any chance?

2. My console was not "one of the first". It's actually a "second revision" Xbox.

3. I'll take a high-pitched whine over a $400 heap of plastic any day, thank you very much. If the machine can't operate in normal conditions, then it's not ready to hit the shelves. It's as simple as that.

I'd like to see you eat $400 ($600 if you include games and accessories). We'll see how cooperative you are at that point.

Yeah, you're gonna steal one from a retail store by replacing it with yours without even asking for an RMA from MS? Real ethical buddy. Just remember that what goes around comes around.

Ethics? Are you kidding me? Ethical would have been for Microsoft to adequately test and manufacture the 360 in the first place. As far as what goes around comes around... I already got what comes around: I paid for my future actions in advance when I bought this damned thing in the first place. I guess Karma can see into the future.

There are as many horror stories with regard to MS customer service as there are with 360's. Fsck that hassle. I paid money to play games, not to get dicked around.

So what you're saying is that you bought a product that carried a warranty to work for XXXXX days/months. It worked just fine while under the warranty period. After the company no longer guaranteed the product to work, the product stopped working.

And now you feel it is your right to steal from a retailer, who had nothing to do with the warranty or the company you're pissed at, and put the retailer out a couple hundred dollars, all because you feel entitled to something?

Ya, I see a lot of sympathy flowing your way.

It's called VENTING, but I'm sure you've never felt like doing that, so you're better than me.

It's also called product awareness. If this helps someone else make a decision as to whether or not they should spend their hard earned money on a 360, then great.

You're apparently in the dark regarding the 360's problems, so spare me.

Honest question with no intention to bash - If you knew of the 360's problems, why didn't you purchase an extended warranty either through the retailer or through MS?

Certainly a fair question.

I'm not much of a believer of extended warranties (with one or two rare exceptions). If a product needs an extended warranty just so the consumer can use it for a reasonable period of time, then it's not ready for production. If I've got my eye on a product but it's having a large number of problems, and people are buying warranties to protect themselves from those problems, then I won't buy it. It's why I waited a year to buy the 360 in the first place. When I did buy the 360, it was after I learned that the 360 had undergone a product revision and the general sentiment was that the problems had been resolved. Eight months after that revision, we're learning that it didn't solve all of them.

So in hindsight, I don't wish that I had bought an extended warranty... I wish I hadn't bought the 360.
