Has anyone used Xandros, and will anyone recommend using it???

I need something different to windows!!!!

can't speak for xandros except it used to be Corel Linux. Last time I tried Corel it was the best self-configuring, most win-like distro by far...

(edit) and, oh yeah, apparently robertson got most of his ideas from Xandros... But couldn't quite make crossover and other things work. So Xandros is lindows done right.

too bad there's no free version of Xandros...
 
i wanted to try it
but when i looked a few months ago....no free version available, bleh. love mandrake though. when i get my pc going again ill be trying slackware, libranet and who knows what else until i find one i really like
 
They were giving out free v1.0 CDs at LinuxWorld Expo in San Fran in August. I installed it and it was buggy as hell. After finally getting the patches installed, it was pretty reasonable. It's a Debian based OS from what I understand (didn't poke around too much). Some things are nicely candy coated, but to me, it needed polish (ie. the update utility is browser based and kept telling me that updates were available even though I had installed them). Shows potential, but there are better dists out there right now that aren't commercial.
 
So it must be quite new if not many people have tried it???

I have not used linux.... is it worth giving it a go???

what is the difference between try Ark and Mandrake Linux ?

It's not used by many Linux users because it's non-free. It costs money and is closed source.

Not something that's usefull for playing around with and learning from. Limited potential because of the propriaty nature of it.

Can be usefull for certian circumstances, maybe very usefull for migrating from Windows to Linux in a business enviroment, since many professional computer users become used to some of the more esoteric features of Windows and may have trouble adapting to a different enviroment and programs. Potentially VERY usefull.

Worth looking into at least if you face that sort of situation.

$99 for windows compatability, 39 without.

interesting though that they recommend running it on Debian.
 
I use and still recommend RedHat as a good dist to start with. Debian is a very good dist, but RedHat does a lot more things automatically at install time which can be helpful for newbies. I do not have experience with the "johnny-come-latelys" 🙂
