Yeah I'll probably be getting the Asus X99 Deluxe, beautiful board and has the features I need.

Not usually a fan of white, but that board looks sharp and extremely well featured!

The shorter slot, second down from the top PCIe x16.

looks like a mini PCI-e, if I'm not mistaken. If it is indeed a m2 slot, then I say design fail. For starters, a dual GPU blocks it. Also, a longer drive would look dumb sticking out of the mobo like that.

Here's hoping that they have one on the back of the board!

I didn't find the one on the back, but the manual shows the m2 slot on page 1-36, along with some funky looking m2 racket on page "xiv"

Hmmm... with my current setup I'll need 11 SATA connectors. I suppose I could move my backup HDD to a NAS enclosure and put it on the network.

Edit: Solved the problem. Bought a 256GB 850 Pro and four 1TB 840 EVOs.

Say what you want about Adam....but he does not let a few dollars stand in his way when he has a goal. 😎

Colour scheme works perfectly for me with the white/black. My water cooling fluid is white in clear tubes and all my blocks and fittings are black. Should be sweet!

Let me ask you....Are you using Ice Dragon or a (Mayhems) dye? Reason being, I'd prefer to just use pure distilled and a silver bullet with white tubing but I'm going to be using a dual bay reservoir so of course I'd like to have the fluid look white. If you're using Ice Dragon are you seeing any negative effects like staining, settling, etc.?

Yeah I am using Mayhem's Pastel UV White. Anything with UV will leave a yellow stain, but it's apparently dependent on what tube you are running. I have clear XSPC stuff which is prone to staining from what I've read. I'm going to try switching it out when I rebuild my loop with the new platform. I don't get any buildup or gunk though. I had this same stuff in a loop for about a year and only had staining. Switched it for fresh fluid a few months ago.

The staining I get is pretty obvious in natural light when the PC is powered down.

You can avoid all this by just using white tube of course, it doesn't look much different from clear tubing with white fluid showing.

Black and white or black and silver looks very classy indeed. Right now ROG, MSI Gaming, Gigabyte Gaming, EVGA Classy and Asrock Killer/Fatality series are all sporting the black and red theme which takes away the uniqueness of the ROG series.

I know you are looking to buy near top-of-the-line board but I am just trying to understand Asus' marketing/product positioning. The current price for the Deluxe is $450:

I would have expected such a high price for their ROG boards. The Asrock X99 Formula / X99 Professional sport 12 power phases/1300Watt power delivery, dual M.2 slots with one of them PCIe 3.0 x4 Ultra M2, a solid sound solution, high end capacitors, etc. but surely these won't cost $450.

I feel like Asus is staring to charge some hefty premiums while everyone else is bringing higher end components and features at lower prices. I don't think their boards hold the advantage they used to have a decade ago.

Do you guys feel that Asus still holds that something extra over MSI/Asrock/Gigabyte or is it mostly your familiarity with the brand/BIOS and proven track record that keeps you coming back to them?

I wouldn't be opposed to using another brand but Asus was stellar with their X79 lineup in terms of features and support. The updates were constant and it seemed they added settings to tweak with every revision.

The Rampage V Extreme has been revealed! E-ATX form factor, AC wifi, loaded!

ASUS-X99-Rampage-V-Extreme-Motherboard-635x496.jpg

For storage, the Rampage V Extreme includes 12 SATA 6 Gbps ports and two SATA Express ports. There’s also two USB 3.0 headers and two USB 2.0 headers. Expansion slots include five PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots and an open-end PCI-e 3.0 x1 slot. The SupremeFX audio chip is isolated on its own PCH indicated by a red colored line and offers hd audi through the 7.1 channel audio jack at the I/O panel. The I/O panel is loaded with ports which include 10 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, a Gigabit Ethernet LAN port, WiFi AC connector, 7.1 Channel audio jack, reset button and a ROG connect button. ASUS bundles the ROG Rampage V Extreme with the OC Panel which is an enthusiast grade overclocking tool built for overclockers offering easier accessibility to several overclocking tools and utilities which can be configured in real time. The pricing for the board is not known at the moment but we can expect a $450+ US range for this bad boy.

Without reading more, that sure is a strange setup. Should have put the M.2x4 slot at the top of the PCIe connectors

Nice looking board, but defiantly a design fail on the M.2 vertical socket and bracket setup.

Welp, only way to go is SATA express, otherwise it seems you wreck an otherwise beautifully designed board.

I'm going to skip the RVE. I'm sure it's a great board, but I don't like the colour scheme.

@RS I agree if these prices are correct they are out of whack. I paid $500 for my R4E very close to X79 launch and I believe that deluxe was $350 for X79. If $450 is what the deluxe will now be on launch day my guess is the RVE will be $600. Asus makes great boards, but they're not the be all and end all and don't command a premium in my mind, especially given what is usually their very poor warranty service.

I have an ASRock board with a 4670K and have no complaints.

SATA express is a compromise as its only capable of 10Gb, where a properly implemented M.2 slot can do 20Gb on 4 x PCIe 2.0 or M.2 ultra 32Gb on PCIe 3.0

So IMO SATA express is definitely not the way to go. I would hazard a guess the SATA express is already obsolete as a solution.

Marvel have produced a 4 x PCIe 3.0 NVMe controller that is sampling to OEM now, so next year we will be tapping into the M.2 Ultra slots bandwidth.

The Rampage V seems to have all the features I want. Does the SupremeFX audio have headphone amplification?
I don't know these days, but the way things are going could probably park your car on the side when you come home from work 🙂

J/K

Probably does.

I meant as a compromise if one really likes the ASUS X99 Deluxe mobo. For people who have to budget to upgrade frequently, it's probably not a deal breaker. For people like me who are looking for a mobo as the foundation of a system build to last ~5 years, a compromise like that is the suck; which is a bummer because I'm really liking the looks of that mobo. Maybe Asus will revise it by the time I build a new system in about a year, since it kinda looks like M.2x4 was added a bit late in the game.
