X800 comes in 128MB and 256MB flavors as well. 🙂
I'm sure we will see some of these product designations like the "X800" dissapear and be replaced by the X800GTO, but in the meantime, it is terribly confusing, and Ati has not taken care of thier sad, confusing product nomenclature for several years now.
The worst part of this is when product partners start to put thier own "play" on these designations confusing the consumer even more. The sad part is the fact that the 12-pipe X800 / X800GTO / whatever you want to call it, for the price is one hell of a value.

Yes Ati is really dumping at low prices. Makes one wonder if their ecconomics are very poor, or does the next gen mid/low range (which the inquirer states they are holding back) just blow this stuff out of the water? If a fire sale, those who buy now (like myself), will be happy with their good deal, but if next gen is that much better - we will wish we waited.
In general naming of vid cards and versions supplied is very confusing and does take advantage of those who do not do their own research. Saphire and their pro advantage cards are a prime example of this. The other great con is the 512 mb 6200, geared to the guy who only listens to the sale speal.

im not sure but this must be the longest time ever that chip design has lasted. not that R300's bad or anything, its a damn fine piece of engineering but theyre spinning it like a merry go round now.R520 has to be ready now!

You forgot about the X850 series. ATI's full line up consists of about TWO dozen cards and they shown dramatic market share gains in Q2'05 but still LOST money. Obviously they were selling their chips at a lost to gain market share. In contrast, NVIDIA's sales and market share declined but they made $75 million (net income) this past quarter :shocked:
"ATI widened its lead over NVIDIA in the desktop segment as compared to the prior quarter. In Q2'05, ATI's desktop graphics shipments grew 6.2% sequentially while NVIDIA?s desktop shipments fell 7.5%. ATI's gains on the desktop side came entirely from its line of integrated graphics devices, shipments of which increased more than three-fold during the period. On the discrete side, ATI's segment share remained essentially flat at 55.4% while NVIDIA?s segment share fell from 46.8% to 46.1% during the period."

I'm a relative computer enthusiast (build my own comp every few years, upgrade maybe every 1.5, play modern games, etc.) and I currently have an X800XL, but I am very confused by what ATI is trying to accomplish here.
IMO, graphics cards should be priced about $50 apart on the high end, maybe $25 apart on the low end (up to $100) and should top out around $400-$450 (although I don't know if I could spend more than $300 any time soon).
I see a need for about 10 cards altogether:

$75
$100
$150
$200
$250
$300

It seems that the proliferation of cards makes it very difficult to know what is good, how they perform in various situations (the low end cards with 256 memory and mid range cards with 512 memory just seem like a scam to me), and where to best spend your money. Not to mention the intentional confusion created by calling your low end card the same thing as your competitor's high end card.
I think the graphics card companies really need to be more careful in their product lines, or they will risk making people frustrated and more likely to buy from a different company.
