X2 steppings.

I know there have been many posts regarding different steppings, but after reading those threads, it's still not clear to me what the differences are. I'm looking at getting a X2 3800+ and these are AMD's pages for the E4 and E6 steppings. It doesn't look like there are any differences at all:

Unless you plan to overclock every last MHZ out of them, for all intensive purposes they are pretty much the same.

If you do plan to overclock, then it is a matter of opinion.

ive always heard that the e6 stepping is a better overclocker than the e4. and from the looks of it, the one you liked to in newegg appears to be the e6 stepping.

Thanks for the info. guys. Reason I asked about the model on Newegg is that I've read in several places now that the E6 X2 3800+ had Toledo Cores while the one on Newegg has a Manchester Core.

For all the insensitive and pornography, take an Opteron 165, 170 or 175. I have choosen 170 for my system, it is arriving on Tuesday from the United States to Argentina specially for me

At first I chose 175, but changed the order to 170 coz there is a difference of 136 USD for just 200 Mhz, or 400 in an hypotetical sitatuation of 11x400.. and I plan to make some overclock.. of about 500 Mhz / 600 Mhz

E4 and E6 they are all manchester, my man.

L2 cache is 512.

Thats why everyone is picking Opterons, all of them have 1Mb. Addind to that, X2 have 1 HT link, and opterons have 3.

Right now I have an A64 3500+. I think it's 2.2GHz. The X2 3800+ is 2.0GHz and the Opteron 165 is only 1.8GHz. That's 400MHz less than what I have now (if I go with the Opteron). Is that loss of 400MHz worth the extra L2 Cache? Also, AMD's page doesn't show if the Opteron 165 has L1 Cache.

You are missing something:

Dual-core. You can't compare the Ghz between single-core and dual-core.
Applications and games are heading to multi-core systems. If you overclock, with an Opteron 165 or 175 you can reach 2.7 easily.

If you still don't wanting dual-core, head for single cores Opterons:

AMD Opteron 146 (E4 version) 200x10=2.0
AMD Opteron 148 (E4 version) 200x11=2.2
AMD Opteron 150 (E4 version) 200x12=2.4
AMD Opteron 154 (E4 version) 200x14=2.8

EDIT: And remember you can always have a mild overvclock with stock coolers on Opterons and gain that 400 Mhz you want.

Yes they all have L1 cache. And what matters is the L2 cache and the 3 HTT links isntead of one. Plus X2 needs 1.45 volts to work, while Opterons needs 1.35. That would mean that you can overclock it to 2.0 or 2.2 if you want without needing extracooling or sometimes not giving anymore volts to the chip

where did you see that? 1000 Ghz is the bus frecuency of Ht on both of them.

I guess you make a mistake and read the operating frecuency of the 3800 (that is, 2000 Mhz or 2.0 Ghz)

I suggest using CPU-Z to see CPU information, it will show you ifits E4 or E6:

(look at the left menu, at the top you can find "software")

I guess E4 and E6 is shown in the "Revision" line.
