hi everyone,

i received my x2 4800 the other day. i've already formatted twice, installed the amd driver and optimizer. loaded the most recent chipset drivers and video drivers. i did overclock it to 270 x 10 = 2700 and also 225 x 12 = 2700 and using various combinations. after crashing and rebooting, i dropped it down to default speeds and voltage. during intense multitasking, the pc locks up or reboots. i was playing battlefield and i did an alt+tab to run quicktime and other apps just to see how it would go but no luck. i am really disappointed with this processor so far.

ran super pi at default and overclocked speeds with no errors. also ran memtest at overclocked and defaults with no errors. checked PSU with a multimeter and voltages seem to be normal.

anyone have ideas?

hi there,

thanks for your reply. i am in desperate need of assistance:)

nvidia video drivers - ForceWare Release 90
Version: 91.47
Release Date: October 16, 2006
WHQL Certified

nvidia nForce 4 drivers - Version: 6.86
Release Date: July 7, 2006
WHQL Certified

i'm getting ready to reinstall windows as we speak. i ran my single core venice 3200 at 270 x 10 = 2700 with no issues. when i upgraded, that's when i had stability issues. should i try a different video driver? what's the order that i should install my drivers? AMD driver, Optimizer, Chipset, Video, etc?

First try to swap the Vid Card Driver... they are Problematic with your Vid Card ... I think after that you should be ok.... If that doen't fix it .....

Post back and I'll have better Info.....

First Change back to an 80 series vid card Driver and see what that does..

Edit : also what BIOS ??

i can revert back to the 80.xx video drivers and see what happens. i did have good luck with 84.21 when i was using a single core.

also, i am using A8N-SLI Premium Beta BIOS 1302
Latest beta BIOS.

even though it's beta, i've used it for a long time and have had no stability issues on my overclocked AMD64 3200 @ 2.7 GHz.

before i can proceed, i need to finish formatting and reinstalling windows

Hehehe.. you sound like me... If it Ain't right.... Format

You Might want to Also Find a Repacked Platform Driver... Do Not Install the dreaded Nvidia SW IDE Driver........

I have a pair of the GTX's also and was getting hard locks... and that was the fix...

Between the Vid card Driver, and the Format you should be good to go...

LOL, yep i've been formatting almost every day since i got my new cpu:)

okay, how do you usually install your drivers? i installed AMD driver, optimizer, chipset, and then video.

yes, i definitely avoid the ide driver. i also don't use the onboard nic or sound. i disable all of the onboard stuff and use PCI devices.

Is that still an issue? I've been reading here and there that it usually isn't a problem anymore.

I'm getting ready to do a mobo swap tonight to move from nf3 to nf4, and have dl'd the same nVidia platform driver package, release 7/7/2006. Is there any other part of it you don't recommend? MSI also has a package linked on their site, smaller, slightly earlier release date.

If I had to guess I'd say you're having heat problems. Have you checked your CPU temperature at load? Have you tried re-seating your heatsink and lowering your DRAM multiplier and/or timings?

I've been a Devout AMD/NVIDIA person for years and tears.... (yes both apply)

After fighting Quirky VIA Chipsets I finally Moved to NVIDIA... My First was an ABIT NF-7S

and I had more driver issues than I can shake a stick at.

Most of the Issues have centered on their Chipset Drivers....

I've had 6 NFORCE Boards Since that Time. (1-NF3 150 2-NF3-250 2 - NF 4 SLI 1 - SLI 32x)

I have used a Repack from Guru 3d and they gave me top Notch transfer rates and no goofy issues.....

It has only been Lately that they have had issues with their Vid drivers and .13 nm 70 series GPU's.

I just Jumped in to an Intel for the first time in 7 years. trying to escape those issues.

So far I'm Happy !! have SLI working on a Intel 975x hopefully official support will happen soon....

Good luck with your upgrade ... If you need assistance.. I've dealt with the issues and have a good idea how to fix them usually.

okay, i just reinstalled windows but did not install the AMD driver or optimizer. i'm going to experiment and see what happens for a few days because right now, i have achieved stability at 250 x 11 = 2750 @ 1.4v. i've used asus probe to gauge my CPU temps and i'm sitting at 36C at idle and at load, it hits about 45C. also passed memtest overnight. i haven't played BF2 on it yet. getting ready to install and will update you on the results.

Sorry about your issues. I recently upgraded to a 4800 X2 almost a month ago and my setup is running like a champ.

Here was my thread that I made asking for tips
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1940435

Go here and it shows you the order of how I installed my drivers for the X2
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81429

Even though your doing a reformat and that guide up top shows you how to install an X2 on an existing Windows install, you can use it to verify that the drivers were installed properly and registry was edited properly.

Good luck

Thanks, Mr. Fox. I may take you up on that offer if I get into deep crap later tonight. First, going out for steak + beer to get into proper frame of mind.

I only downloaded and installed these:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/amdcpusetup.exe
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/Setup.exe
http://www.amdzone.com/files/WinXPdualcorehotfix.exe

Umm....is your windows install the one with XP SP2 slipstreamed on? I remember reading somewhere that it needs to have SP2.

yes, i reinstalled a version of windows xp with sp2 slipstreamed. i have played BF2 for about a couple of hours and have had no crashes. i am going to install the patches from amd and see if it gets any better. thanks for your help.

okay, i'm going to stay away from the XP patch. it froze my pc up. i uninstalled and removed the entry from the registry.

interesting, my pc froze up during heavy multitasking when i installed the amd driver and optimizer, but when i uninstalled them and went back to my original settings, everything is perfectly stable. :)

I'll just throw in my 2 cents...I have tried to use the specific AMD Op and hotfix on my system and they caused problems both times. It (they) only apply to specific games and even then only if played for a long time...I have not been able to duplicate that statement though.

As for the Nvidia SW Ide Drivers, I have always run those without any issues. I think if you did a poll to see how many used and did not use the drivers, I think more do. They had issues some years ago but have since cleared up any issues. If you do a HD Tach test you would probably find a noticable difference between MS drivers and the AMD drivers.

I wish you the best as I've been there many times and it's a real pain in the a$$ when silly things like that pop up...
