Definitely. The 4600 is 400 Mhz faster, and the increased L2 cache of the Opteron only makes up for ~75-100. Now, if you were an overclocker, I'd say the 170, since they usually overclock higher. But, for a non-overclocker, get the 4600.

To aid my video editing, I'm getting a 4800+ next week. Moving from a 3500+ costing was $265 shipped.
With the speed my 4400+ is doing in my graphic rig, I think I will be satisfied for a while. Hope yours will do. Good computing!

when I upgraded from single core 3500+ to x2 4800+ it is like it is running at 3500+ speed but I understand that there is not much performance gain except to run many apps like I run with Photoshop CS2 and Premiere Pro really smoothly

I'd just get X2 3800+ at this point since it's practically can be OCed as high as any other X2. But if you can get a cheap Opty 165, that might still be a good choice, no need for 170s.

Whilte the Opty 165 might give the most bang for buck, the 170 will give a little more flexibility with memory since you have the 10x divider. It'll also be good for a crappy mobo which can't handle such a high HTT/FSB (don't forget to reach 3000g you'll need 333 with the 165/9x multi).

The OP is not an overclocker.
