x1950pro finally at $199 [pcie]

I wonder if the Asus card would fit in a system like the Dell E521 which does not support dual slot video cards. While the cooler takes up a second slot, the front does not. I'll see if I can pop one open tomorrow and take a peek.

I feel bad for the people that paid $260+ for other x1950pro's this past week.

those are the people that "had" to have one.

if you needed one, it was a 'fair' deal

you gotta realize this technically isn't a 'hot deal' . . . the x1950p is just at MSRP . . . finally . . . it is just an excellent card for $199 compared to other products in the same performance range.

let's see the sales and competition drives prices lower

hopefully

🙂

I don't know if this is the same... but if it is anything like my 1900GT (I think this is the same but with a die shrink?), you're gonna want to go with the Asus / zipzoomfly part because of the cooler.

The cooler on the Sapphire part looks just like the reference design used on 1900GT/XT's and whatever... and with that sink those cards run 95-100C at load. I really wasn't comfortable with that, so I slapped a Zalman cooler on it which dropped my loaded temps by ~45C. You read that right... 45C.

The Zalman sink also allowed a 100MHz core overclock (max the ATI driver allowed) whereas with the stock cooler 0MHz was allowed. And at that 100MHz overclock it was still running at the same ~45C lower loaded temp. The Zalman sink is also under the noise floor of my other 120mm / cpu fans... whereas that reference sink spins that tiny little fan up so fast it sounds like a turbine - it was very noticeable and became the loudest thing in my case by a good margin.

And yes, before going to the Zalman I did try to remove / as5 / reinstall the stock sink... same result... 95-100C. So given the prices are the same I would recommend going with the Asus for the chance that the cooler is better.

These chips may well run cooler but it still seems like safe insurance.

According to Anandtech's review, it sits somewhere above the 7900GS, above/around the 7900GT, above/around the 1900gt, and below the 1900xt 256mb.

The more I think about it, I should have jumped when I saw the x1900xt 256mb for $234+shipping. Now that $34 difference is closer to $75.

I'd say this card is definately a sweet deal at $199 shipped with that Asus cooler... but of course that's hoping it'll overclock well. Maybe I'll jump the gun and report back with my findings. 🙂

On the same note if the regular egg and zip prices are $200, then it's only a matter of time before an actual hot deal pops up (coupon, rebate, whatever).

I mean technically the going price usually isn't seen as all that hot. If you are at all on the cusp could you just hold out for DX10 products?

Isn't the reason these are selling so fast is because nvidia and Ati are releasing new DX10 vidoe cards before the holidays?

Usually you can just grab two, but I believe Asus rips you off by not including the new crossfire dongle. (Each card is supposed to come with one, and you need two to complete the crossfire connection.) You're supposed to buy their special crossfire edition for that.

Blah. I guess you should be able to get dongles separately somehow, though I doubt there's much supply yet.
