I recently bought an X1900xtx and I read it requires about 20-30 anps on the 12v rail. My PSU is a generic 550watt psu and can only provide 18amps on the 12v rail. I have 2 hard drives and a dvd-drive connected to molex connectors.
Would the X1900xtx work in my computer.
 
I wouldn't run that card with that generic PSU. 18A is pathetic for a "500W" PSU. A quality 400W would be just fine for that card.
 
I wouldn't bother with two PSUs. It more space, more of a hassle, and inefficient. You can get a very decent PSU that will easily handle your graphics card for $50-60.

X1900XTX consumes about 9.75A MAX of +12V power:

Short #14 and #3 connectors...or the green wire to any black wire. It is recomended to use a PSU tester. However, a paperclip works... I used a "bobby pin".

It's fun to test components outside of a running computer. Especially fans ( noise test) and water cooling (leak test).

Problem with setting it as a dedicated power source for video, how would you have it start with your main system? Other then manually?

Yes it will work, I was using a 380W Antec PSU without any issues.
 
make sure you have devices plugged into the PS before shorting those pins though

I have heard that an unloaded PSU will burn itself out when turned on
 
I ran my x1900xtx just fine with an antec smartpower 450W for awhile. I would just try it out before doing anything else, if the PSU won't handle it you'll just shut down.

The only time i ever tried it, without anything plugged in, and with the PSU case removed, and my face about 10cm from the insides, it did 🙁

Luckily it just scared the living crap out of me...

well worth the risk. just wear one of these suits and you'll be fine.
 
Be advised that if your PSU fails under load theres a chance it'll take other more expensive components along with it when it goes ... for example your X1900XTX.

If you insist on skimping out on your PSU, you would be better off trying the Antec 430 watt instead on the generic 550 because at least it'll actually supply the amount of juice its rated for, however even if it appears to work fine you should upgrade to a quality 500 watt model as soon as you can afford it.
