I just bought a x1800xt, and i am excited to get my hands on it. I got a great deal on it. Now with its stock fan, what have people been able to do when it comes to overclocking this card. Also what would be a good fan to put on it to overclock, but no sound like a snow blower running.

700/1600 should be pretty easy. Lots of guys have used the Zalman VF700 with good success. If you like to mod than I've seen some amazing results with a Zalman CNPS7000ALCU hooked up to an X1800XT. The card loaded in the low 50s and was very quiet.

I used a vf-700 on mine for a while, its quiet but doesnt cool as well as the stock cooler. The 7000BAlCu does fit (does require some work, I had to use pliers to get the mounting screws in) and the screws werent too hard to put in.

The reason why im not using it right now is that you need quite a bit of space inbetween your PCI-e slot and PCI slots. I have an SLI board so the second PCI-e x16 slot was blocking the card from going in properly. I even tried bending the heatsink a lot to see if it would fit, but just couldnt seem to get it in properly enough to output video.

Ya, seems hit or miss according to which motherboard you have. I think it would work fine on the motherboards with the extra-wide space between PCI-E slots.

Another idea that worked pretty well for my brother is to remove the stock fan from the VF-700 and attach a high-speed 92mm fan. His X1800XL at 1.3V loads at 60C. Not the greatest temps in the world but better than the stock hsf by far (probably better than the stock XT cooler too).

i used CCC to overclock my card 675/800 i ran 3dmark05 before i touched the cards speeds and i got a 7700 and afterward a 7776. idk if its just me, but that seems like in theory no gain. now i am one that is not an overclocking ace, so am i doing something wrong. I know my CPU is a bottle neck

AMD 3000

is that basically my problem here.

thanks

It is practly no gain and with only a 3000+ running there you are DEFINITELY CPU bound

QFT. Invest in some better CPU cooling and try to OC that before you try to OC your GPU.

you need 2GB (1GB is fine but 2GB should go along well with that X1800XT) of PC 3200 and a decent HSF for your CPU, Athlon 3000+s are good overclockers (if its a Venice even more so), if you get it to to the 2.3-2.6ghz area you are set.
