Compgeek. Do it. Put your system back to stock specs. Flash back to your default bios. Run it at stock speeds. Run your whole system stock, then start a new thread. And if your problems are gone, at least you know what it's cause was. If your problems remain, you can knock BFG's chip off his shoulder. And it's a big chip. I heard BFG visits the chiropractor regularly. 😉

Just do it right.

The reason it's better to let the game handle it is for performance, as the game dev can specify textures *not* to apply AF to. But forcing it might override a bad game setting (or maybe app-specific optimization, but I'm not sure about that).

xt, I think HQAF is a checkbox. It's only in effect if you force AF via the CP/CCC or in-game.

cg, try disabling CatAI to see if it helps.

BFG10K makes a good point -- we can't be 100% certain the X1800XT at 700/1600 is perfectly stable. Did you run Artifacts with ATITool? Video stress testing with 3dmark looping ?

I don't think drivers are causing COD2 to crash when going to desktop. I used to Alt-tab all the time when I was playing COD2 on my X800 . . .

Though it can also depend on the game (i.e. HL2 crashes when I alt tab no matter if it's on my GT or on my previous X800)

Taking it a step further, we can't really ever use compgeeks card as a reference anymore. If the problem remains after he puts everything back to stock, many will speculate the card has been damaged in some way shape or form due to running it out of spec and using another bios. This may very well be true and there is no way to prove or disprove the card has not been damaged. So, Compgeeks setup is moot.

If it does work correctly after returning everything to stock, well, at least we will know why. But, if it still acts up, "it's because he damaged the card". Get it? 😉

Ok, checked them out. It does appear that even at around 5 feet front of you and beyond, the ground shimmers. Easy to see the mip transistions.

A few questions. In game settings under graphics, what is your Anistropic Filtering set to?
I believe if you have it set to "anistropic" the default is 8x or 16X. There are also Bilinear and Trilinear options. Make sure its not set to either. Just anistropic. In your ATI CP or what ever your using, for anistropic filtering, make sure it says "application preference"
to let CoD2 control it. Also, set quality to the highest possible settings in the CP.

???? 😕

Last time I played COD2, the option to enable AF was separate from the option to switch between bilinear and trilinear. Maybe my memory deceives me, but what you just said would make things worse. AF is not a replacement for trilinear, it works with trilinear filtering. You can also have AF with bilinear, but that would look worse. I'm not sure what another option besides bilinear/trilinear would be in that same menu list: point sampling?

When I played COD2, I enabled trilinear in addition to AF, and I didnt see any shimmering.

Once again, I think we've come to the YMMV with shimmering.

Ackmed-

I remember your posting a video showing your GTX(s?) shimmering badly in BF2. What map was that? Karkand I think? At the MEC main base walking past the hanger?

I wanna make a video and see if I see it too.

OK, I see the shimmering. Seems to happen over too wide an area to be bilinear. Could be trylinear gone amuck. The fact that forced AF reduces shimmering makes me think some texture layers might not be getting full filtering. I'd try setting HQ AF and App Ctrl in CCC, then Trilinear and AF in CoD2. If that doesn't help, then set CatAI to Off.

Of course, you'd have to check that Texture and Mip-Map Filtering are set to HQ, or whatever their max is, in the CCC for all tests (and all games, for that matter, with a card this fast).

Also, if you have the option, enable "Quality with Trilinear" for AF in CCC. I have that option in ATI Tray Tools. If nothing above helps, download and install ATT and set "Quality with Trilinear" in ATT > D3D > Settings.

If he has the same problems with stock hardware then so be it. I just object to people trying to evaluate products that are running out of spec.

I fully agree with the context of your post above. If you run out of spec, there are chances of problems. No question. It's just the way your tone comes off, and that's where the chip on the shoulder reference was from. But you are correct.

Thing is, as I stated above, if he still has problems running everything stock, then people will start attributing this to a damaged card due to running it out of spec. Mark my words.
So, we can't use Compgeeks input on this at all. Not with a biased forum like this.

Particularly when trying to troubleshoot crashes. Unlike BFG I do tend to OC pretty much whatever I can- and I have been known to rip ATi's drivers on occasion- but without having all of your hardware running within its specifications there is NO WAY you can try and narrow down the issue to drivers or ATi in general.

Sidenote- You install CoolBits once and then you forget about it- when you update drivers all OC tools are still there. It isn't something you have to do with every new driver update.
