When the boy was 6 he fell off the monkey bars and broke his arm. Since then, every couple of months, he's complained about his lower back. Wife's chiropractor is offering a $20 special for children and is considering taking him. Concerned about the radiation exposure with him being a child. Do I need to look for some type of certification of the equipment? Or skip it all together?

Thanks

Which x-rays are you worried about? The ones your son got after he broke his arm or the ones that the chiropractor may do? The amount of radiation in one x-ray is very, very small. You can ask the chiropractor about his machine specifically and whether it's a newer or older machine. Asking for the power or radiation exposure might be good. You can then compare it online with other machines. Your kid should be fine though. X-ray machines made in the last 20 years emit very little radiation.

The new ones. Don't want to fry his testicles (or any thing else) because their machine may not be calibrated right or certified. I'll ask about the age of their machine.

Might should just take him to his pediatrician.

Thanks.

If it's a new x-ray machine, why are you worried? The levels of radiation are tiny and do not affect children any more than adults. Granted, high levels of radiation exposure can affect development, but x-rays do not emit levels anywhere in a dangerous range anymore.

Meant the new x-rays instead of the old ones when he broke his arm. I'll find out about the machine.

Thanks.

is your wife's chiropractor's clinic a newer, state-of-the-art kind of clinic? or is it some nasty, run-down, cheapo equipment clinic?

either way, don't worry about it. if you're worried, demand a gonadal shield.

personally, i use digital x-ray... it reduced radiation dose to patients by about 80(percent) of newer plain film x-ray machines.

edit: wtf? why won't the forums recognize the percent sign? everytime i type (shift-5), i get this:
