This game would be really cool if they combined a first person shooter with the strategy portion.

I wouldn't mind if it was done like Dungeon Keeper, where standard mode is isometric, but you can control a specific member in First Person and switch between then that way. I don't think first person works as well for turned based games though.

Edit: I was really just thinking of a new game, and not XCOM. It would be cool to have 4X options with RTSes even more than with FPSes though.

It actually would be fun to have a good X-Com FPS based on the first game, not the weird black oil / X-Files MIB FPS that was made instead, or the cheesy low-budget "X-Com Enforcer" that changed too much.

A first-person view of a terror mission at night could be good scary fun, when a chrysallis runs out of the shadows and grabs one of your squadmates. Then you have to skill them before the egg hatches . . . .

I personally would not buy that. I can "Almost" see something like a Rainbow 6 type FPS game, if it was done right. But why do that when the strength of the game is turn based tactical, top down combat?

Aren't there enough universes out there to make the kind of game you are describing without delving into the Xcom universe?

I just checked out the game play video on gamespot. Has anyone else seen this? I am a huge fan of the original series and am trying not to fall into the trap of "Why did they change X, Y, Z from a formula that wasn't broken" but I have to say that it is failing. I want to like this game. But I have great fear that the push towards brighter colors and cinematics has detracted from the core strategy of the original.

Anyone else have any thoughts? or opinions to the contrary?

Yeah I'm with you, I want this to be great but I've yet to see anything about more than 4 set soldier squads, no mention of ammo management and it seem WOW like cartoony. I've got a bad feeling about this.

I'm glad i am not the only one. Far too often recently sequels or remakes have disappointed me. I don't want this to be one of them. but I am almost wondering if Xenonauts isn't going to be the "True" successor to the Xcom Franchise.

Squads are capped at 6 and ammo is unlimited with reloads costing a turn or something to that effect (not sure how they handle it for high power weapons such as grenades or rockets, don't think those are unlimited). It is on Steam.

I have been really anticipating this release. I bought the Xcom pack awhile ago on steam and have been playing UFO Defense in between BF3 and MW3.

That tells me that the Aliens are much easier in this game, because a six man squad would have gotten anhilalated in the early part of the original.

Agreed that Xenonauts is looking more like the true successor. The X-COM EU remake is looking more and more like a dumbed down version with pretty graphics. Though i still maintain hope that it's good - trying to look at it as a whole new game, rather than a sequel.

Go for the Xenonauts alpha - if you preorder, you can play now - and it's very playable at this point. I play about 10 hours on each major build to see how its coming along.

*sigh* The internet seems to have gone quiet on X-COM.

Only able to find new information on this X-COM: EU.

Seriously. I would just load cargo planes full of squaddies. Throw them at aliens to flush them out (see star trek redshirts). After they cleared the plane cargo hold I'd prime the grenade in their hand...tehee...

Then leave a couple of my more competant squaddies in power armor ready for some sniping.

LOL. Well, I didn't take THAT approach. But you definitely had to be tactical with your deployment. And some of the maps were HUGE and needed a full squad to investigate. In TFTD, you could be chasing across a board for hours trying to find that one sectoid hiding in the ruins and waiting to pounce.

I know that a lot of my posts about upcoming games tend toward the negative. I so don't want that, or for Xcom to go the way of more 'Commercial' pursuits of late. But honestly, the 'Multi-player' demo I saw looked pretty commercial. I mean, yeah, cool graphics. And turn based combat. But just something about it made me wonder if it was going to be all that.

I didn't really treat my squaddies as being so disposable, but in the early game I would expect to lose 15-20% of them on serious missions. I usually rolled them out in 3 man groups to cover the assorted areas and there was always plenty of backup fire. Once everyone has personal armor, losses usually aren't that bad except on terror missions that go wrong.

I don't know about the aliens necessarily being too easy now, though I am concerned a lot of maps might be too scripted in the sense that you engage group A, then group B, then group C, instead of not knowing where to go and fanning out to find contacts.

So I really checked out the new X-com by Firaxis..I really think alot of this game is going to get lost in translation...Sure Graphics are great..but to a point graphics are making me jaded..I want great gameplay..if they updated the graphics (A little) and put that production money into expanding the game (like Imperium Galatica..or any of our old favorites) we would all buy it in a heartbeat.

My vote is for Xenonauts. It appears true to the old X-com...this isn't saying that I'm not rooting for X-com..I would love it to be a perfect upgraded X-com Ufo Defense..but from what I saw from the trailers..I don't think it will be:(
