X-Bit: No Mass NV30 Production Until 2003

According to what we have heard from our sources, a lot of graphics cards vendors do not expect to get their hands on the NV30 graphics chip from NVIDIA this year due to several reasons that remain undisclosed. Among the others is a very big Taiwan and China-based company, who is often supplied with the GPUs among the first.

The sources revealed that the company does have plans to offer its clients the NV30-based graphics cards, however, not this year. They did not want to discuss the reasons of delay and there is no information about their rivals? products powered by the same VPU. Unfortunately, presently there are also no details about the actual graphics cards powered by the on the novelty.

I want to remind you that according to NVIDIA?s Derek Perez, the Santa Clara based graphics chips developer wants to announce the next-generation NV30 architecture on the 18th of November at Comdex Fall (see this news-story). In fact, the GeForce3 was also announced a couple of month before the appearance on the market, so, there is nothing special in the fact that NVIDIA will delay the actual products again.

Of course, in order to keep the word that was given to the investors, the company may sell 500 to 1500 NV30-based graphics cards to enthusiasts after the Comdex Fall and then continue to improve the yield of the wafers so to cut the manufacturing expenses before launching the NV30 massively in January or February.

Oh well, we can look at the Raedon 9500 Pro, Trident XP4 and Xabre Cards while were waiting.

There is a good chance, if nVidia continues to push back production of NV30, that ATi can paper release R350 at about the same time NV30 hits store shelves.

i am getting kind of tired of paper releases.
That's why a lot of people purchased a Radeon 9700, myself included.

Waiting for something that might be here before the end of the year that might beat the 9700? No thanks, I'll take a kick-ass 9700 right now thanks.

if most graphics card makers arent going to get the chips till 2003 it may be to February or march until NV30 is readily which is not good

well except for ATI

Before you guys chastise nVidia for potentially paper releasing the card a couple months before cards are actaully available, think about what ATI did with the 9700. Exact same thing, in fact Anandtech ran an article on July 18th which was the official "release" and didnt even get a chance to test with card in hand until August 18th, and it was a couple weeks after that until cards were in the stores, IIRC. I dont think its that big a deal, as long as they actaully release it on the 18th of november or whatever.

Yeah, in the past couple of product cycles for GPUs it's been common practice to announce a product a few weeks before cards become available to reviewers which preceeds off-the-shelf availability by a couple of weeks itself.

To be honest, this does not suprise me one bit. I have always considered nVidia's NV30 "launch" at Comdex to be nothing more than a paper launch. The only thing that could stop what X-Bit labs is reporting is if UMC/TSMC got significantly better yields on the .13um process

Or, more likely ATI will release R300 with 1100MHz DDRII. How about the "Radeon 9700 Pro - Pro" . Or Ultra, or Ti.

Eh, I'm going to disagree with everyone here and say that I actually like the paper releases. I like to know what's coming down the pike several months in advance. It helps me to plan my upgrades better...and also prevents me from spending all my money now. Its a good thing.

Hmm, this means that I will be getting a Radeon 9700 soon, I had planned to at least wait and see the price and performance of the NV30. ATI had to be thrilled with this!

This information was just confirmed in the NVDA earnings call. The CEO said NV30 would not ship to production until "January quarter" 2003. Could be as late as March. Friggen sucks, I want to know something about the cards :(

Doesn't this follow every other Nvidia/ATI upgrade "battle"? Nvidia announces new card, ATI releases next-gen "killer" card. Said card is mediocre at best, Nvidia's card comes out and spanks it...ATI announces next "really this time" killer card, Nvidia announces, ATI releases, lather, rinse, and repeat.

Sorry, I'm not trying to tick anybody off, I'm just thinking back over the past few years. I myself am a thrice-burned ATI buyer, so if I seem bitter that's why.

Um. If you haven't noticed, ATi's latest card spanked the best nVidia has to offer. nVidia's 6-month-later response will be NV30, by which time, ATi should have R350 ready in response. The trend is not as it was.
