WWYD - Dell says I didn't make payment

moshquerade

Alright, I bought something from Dell in November. I have a preferred account so they bill me, and I have 30 days to pay without any penalty. I received a bill and paid well within the time limit. I received no further notices saying I was late.

Yesterday, I get a phone call from a thickly accented guy saying I haven't paid, and now the payment is 8 days late, and there is a $30 late fee. If I make a payment over the phone they will waive the late fee. I decline.

I mailed out a check and the payment stub on 12/23/08. My bank has no record of the check being cashed. Lost in the mail? Lost at Dell? If I put a stop payment on the check it will cost me $30 also.

What would you do to remedy this situation? I don't want to pay $30 for something that was someone else's mess up.

Don't put a stop payment on it. Just tell them they messed up, or maybe the post office messed up, but they are going to have to cancel the $30 fee, and send another check to them. Resume making your regular payments as scheduled.

Keep an eye on your account and when they do cash it make sure you get credit for it.

Oh, and to make it clear, when I say they are going to have to cancel the $30 fee, I mean you call them and tell them they have to do that for you. If they say no, then you ask for a manager/supervisor. If they say no, you ask for their manager/supervisor. You work your way up until you are talking to Michael.

Or you could just tell them you'll make the phone payment so they will waive the $30 fee.

Sounds like it's just either slow getting there or was lost, cancel the check and arrange for a new form of payment.

There's your problem - it's probably STILL in the mail having sent it right before XMas (no, I'm not kidding either).

Yeh....the bank said to give it another week, but i don't like this stuff hanging over my head, and I don't want Abdul calling me again.

No, I pay online mostly, but I just let them send me a bill on this one.

I get free checks from my bank so I do still use them occasionally.

Out of curiosity, do you have the option to pay with a debit card? Stories like this are the primary reasons I use checks ONLY when absolutely necessary. If I get billed and pay it via debit I know immediately if it worked, I don't worry about it getting lost in the mail.

can you prove that you put the check in the mail? I don't know how the system works across the big pond but I think it's your word against their word if you don't have some kind of proof that you put it in the mail.

Only check or M.O. by mail.

Lots of people still use checks. I usually pay online to avoid postage fees and it is quicker but I occasionally pay by check, usually for my Perkins Loan payments.

I guess it could still be in the mail mosh but that seems like quite awhile to go from New York to Illinois, even though it was sent during the holidays. I think Shaftatplanetquake has pretty good advice.

Free checks?

I paid for 100 of them for $25 and still have only used less than 10 over the past 5 years. I've thought about using them 'just cause I have them', but I just don't trust the mail and money.

Yes, free checking/debit account and free checks.

This is the first issue I've had with the mail ever, and I'm still not sure if it's just really a problem with Dell's payment receiving department.
