Talking about uninstalling ATI drivers, I'm one of those who NEVER uninstalls the old one. I just throw the new one on top and let the installer do its thing. Never had a single problem. My card is a 9800pro BTW.

I've tried that twice with 100% success. Right before I got my new hard drive, I changed motherboards. The computer booted up as if nothing had happened. I installed the latest drivers for the mobo and the 9800 Pro (same 4.12s as I used on the new hd), and I played games without trouble for another week until I got the new hd.

With that success, I installed the 4.12's on a friend's machine that I'd built because the list of fixed bugs had grown pretty lengthy since the 3.10's...not that I'd found any.

FreshPrince, how did you go back to the old drivers? I usually install them manually, but I've found that Windows XP's System Restore feature does wonders. Creative's drivers have a tendency to royally screw up themselves, and System Restore has been the only way to get them to partially behave again. Even then, a format is the only real solution.

I just uninstall using add remove, reboot in safe mode, and delete any thing left in ati technologies in registry, reboot and install the new drivers.

this has worked fine, it's the damn ati mmc that's not working now.

the only to get it to work for me last time was to reinstall xp, and install the mmc fresh from the cd, then upgrade to mmc 9.1. that worked last time, but I don't feel I should do that everytime ATI screws up MMC...

I'm sure if I reinstall xp fresh and install mmc 9.1 from scratch, it would work...but why does ATI screw with the new versions so much that you can't really roll back without an OS reinstall?

It's not the drivers persay..............it's your Dell. I help out a friend whom owns his own shop and work on systems a lot and of course everyone seems to buy Dell if they don't have a custom system built subsequently, Dells are what I work on most of the time.

In the past several months.....since the first of the year really, I've seen more problems with Dell and driver updates......not only ATI and not only Video drivers.....haven't made a solid connection yet, at first we thought it was a conflict with Dell and SP2 and the drivers....but then we had a few work fine. Another possiblity we're looking at is Dell had it's own update and it may be that those whom updated may be the ones having problems.

At any rate, I hope and really doubt that it's ATI.....but who knows. I update all three of my systems each time a driver comes out and never had a problem.....but next time.....watch....everything will go BOOM! LOL! For sure though, use a driver cleaner to completely remove all instances every time! Good Luck!

you shouldn't have to every time you update drivers. 😉

yup, my dell with A64, 3200+ and MSI mobo must be the problem......

I never said I have a Dell...people automatically assume, just like they automatically assume it's not ATI because their ATI setup is working.

what I want to know is....anyone have an a64 with msi mobo and 9600XT with ati tv wonder pro remote edition?

using xp with sp2?

if you have this setup and run cat 5.4 with mmc 9.06.1 no problems, then come in here and show me how to fix this problem. you can gloat to me all you want if you have my setup and running everything well.

it's not just drivers...I updated from cat 5.2, mmc 9.03 to cat 5.4 and mmc to 9.06.1 that's when everything went to h3ll. Like I said, I have uninstalled everything, booted into safe mode, removed every ATI, TV wonder, and MMC reference in registry, rebooted and installed clean. it's still not working....at this point, it's ATI. Granted I had my AV and MS antispyware running when I installed the software, but they shouldn't have caused anything. I also tried installing with AV and spyware turned off...

Why should I be limited to 10-minute intervals, on a web site???

Hmph. Clicking "OK" doesn't seem to fully clear the time-out either, as then clicking "back", gives you a screen that your session has timed out, so "back" is non-functional on ATI's site now.

ATI now ranks up there with CMD/SI's web site, as the most user-unfriendly one in existance.

The 10 minute timeout warning is annoying, but who cares about session cookies? Honestly, there is so much FUD surrounding cookies and companies "tracking" you it's absurd.

at THIS point, i'd suggest a "restore" with XP or a reinstall.

you have done a LOT of UNinstalling and REinstalling - first, withOUT removing the old drivers, THEN with your antivirus 'on'.

it COULD be your O/S (when we say "dell", we are usually referring to the crap that comes PREinstalled - i assume you did a complete format and install of your OS).

FINALLY, you DO have a nice "dell"
(seriously) 🙂

why just a 9600xt? they are pretty slow . . . . for a a64/3200+ 😉

finally (really) are you XP - SP1 or SP2? DX9c? MB drivers updated? Latest BIOS?

have you tried a full reinstall of windows xp?

or perhaps a better idea, try it in another system and see if whatever the problem is still occurs?

its time to take drastic measures 😉

everything I do, I wipe clean before I update! I've been following this protocol since '91...

when did I attack you? LOL...

don't let the door hit your ass on the way out :|

also, if you have to run a 3rd party software to really clean the drivers...then is that ATI's fault of mine? I have run add/remove drivers always....and if that does not uninstall the drivers, then it's ATI, not me.

all you ATI employees leave now!

Yup.

I know I usually bring out the worst in people but I'll try to help here.
If you have installed MANY versions of their drivers and they all seem to cause problems, you may want to use their driver cleaner program (its on the website) and start fresh. That actually fixed a few issues for me when playing HL2 and Republic Commando.
And I will say I can avoid most problems by not using their MMC and background programs. There are better apps available. Most of us ATI users also know that the Catalyst Control Center is big piece of crap and should be avoided at all costs.

Wow, I have installed every new driver release from 4.10 to 5.3 and never had one glitch on my 9600 pro VIA KT266 chipset. This is with Norton antivirus running! I do remove the control panel and drivers from add remove every time. I am sorry you are having those problems. All the flaming made my head hurt so if this is a repeat I am sorry. Just make sure to add/remove the control center and the drivers (if you are using the control center) every time.

May silicon warm our hearts like it does our cases as we together join hands in holy embraces. LOL

After I read this post I decided to go out and install 5.4 and see if I ran into any problems.

None.

Not One.

Since ATI's probably the only common link between my system and yours, it seems it's something unique to your setup (or dell 2405fp owners). No complaints here, just like plenty of others who use ATI.

this is ATI's response:

If you are experiencing an installation issue which results in an error message,
try typing in the full error message into the search field of ATI?s Knowledge
Base to see if any articles apply to that specific game. To do this, simply
enter the error message into the Search field on our support website at https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894 or if the error is generated by Installshield, search Installsheid?s
site at:

http://consumer.installshield.com

what a joke, basically they're saying FU ATI customer, go get the answer yourself :|

On MMC download page at ATI:

Some new features of ATI's Multimedia Center 8.5/8.6/8.7/8.8, such as EAZYLOOK?, require the use of an ATI REMOTE WONDER?. Support for the REMOTE WONDER? is not currently available through DELL's Customer Support line. DELL recommends not upgrading to MMC posted on ATI.com. Any update to MMC for Dell Customers would be made available by Dell at http://support.dell.com/.

As usual I almost always agree with Larry, ATI's new Website is a big 'ol POS and I may just endup boycotting them untill they fix it by reverting back to the old style.

I have before and they give you back a generic answer like "it's unique only to your machine and the sofware installed on it" (not taken verbaitum) I said to my self BS, because It was an ATI driver issue acording to my dump log and Dr Watson. ATI Email Support BLOWs Chicken Nuggets, Phone Support on the other hand is much better.

Sure expect people to care whether you are talking about a Dell computer or Monitor. Most people wouldn't state that a software install screwed up their monitor.

So leave me alone. 😛

Good point. The last couple of drivers have caused problems for me when I do not uninstall the old ones first. After a reboot my machine acts funny, the fix was to remove all old ATI drivers and reinstall the new ones. I have heard of others haveing the same problem, and my solution worked for them.

I had some problems with installing the MMC software when I went to 5.3 Cat. What I found out was that I needed to reinstall the remote wonder drivers to fix the problem with MMC. Don't ask me why, but it did fix my issues.
