Talking about uninstalling ATI drivers, I'm one of those who NEVER uninstalls the old one. I just throw the new one on top and let the installer do its thing. Never had a single problem. My card is a 9800pro BTW.

I just uninstall using add remove, reboot in safe mode, and delete any thing left in ati technologies in registry, reboot and install the new drivers.
this has worked fine, it's the damn ati mmc that's not working now.
the only to get it to work for me last time was to reinstall xp, and install the mmc fresh from the cd, then upgrade to mmc 9.1. that worked last time, but I don't feel I should do that everytime ATI screws up MMC...
I'm sure if I reinstall xp fresh and install mmc 9.1 from scratch, it would work...but why does ATI screw with the new versions so much that you can't really roll back without an OS reinstall?

It's not the drivers persay..............it's your Dell. I help out a friend whom owns his own shop and work on systems a lot and of course everyone seems to buy Dell if they don't have a custom system built subsequently, Dells are what I work on most of the time.
In the past several months.....since the first of the year really, I've seen more problems with Dell and driver updates......not only ATI and not only Video drivers.....haven't made a solid connection yet, at first we thought it was a conflict with Dell and SP2 and the drivers....but then we had a few work fine. Another possiblity we're looking at is Dell had it's own update and it may be that those whom updated may be the ones having problems.
At any rate, I hope and really doubt that it's ATI.....but who knows. I update all three of my systems each time a driver comes out and never had a problem.....but next time.....watch....everything will go BOOM! LOL! For sure though, use a driver cleaner to completely remove all instances every time! Good Luck!

did you UNinstall MMC?
you shouldn't have to every time you update drivers. 😉

While we're on this subject - WTF is up with their new web site design? You have to accept session cookies, and you have to allow access to some HTTPS (port 443) links, and then it pops up a JavaScript warning that you will time-out in 10 minutes if you don't constantly click "OK", and then also dismiss the confirmation dialog that comes up directly afterwards. Why should I be limited to 10-minute intervals, on a web site???
Hmph. Clicking "OK" doesn't seem to fully clear the time-out either, as then clicking "back", gives you a screen that your session has timed out, so "back" is non-functional on ATI's site now.
ATI now ranks up there with CMD/SI's web site, as the most user-unfriendly one in existance.

it's not just drivers...I updated from cat 5.2, mmc 9.03 to cat 5.4 and mmc to 9.06.1 that's when everything went to h3ll. Like I said, I have uninstalled everything, booted into safe mode, removed every ATI, TV wonder, and MMC reference in registry, rebooted and installed clean. it's still not working....at this point, it's ATI. Granted I had my AV and MS antispyware running when I installed the software, but they shouldn't have caused anything. I also tried installing with AV and spyware turned off...

at THIS point, i'd suggest a "restore" with XP or a reinstall.
you have done a LOT of UNinstalling and REinstalling - first, withOUT removing the old drivers, THEN with your antivirus 'on'.
it COULD be your O/S (when we say "dell", we are usually referring to the crap that comes PREinstalled - i assume you did a complete format and install of your OS).
FINALLY, you DO have a nice "dell"
(seriously) 🙂
why just a 9600xt? they are pretty slow . . . . for a a64/3200+ 😉
finally (really) are you XP - SP1 or SP2? DX9c? MB drivers updated? Latest BIOS?

I never said I installed anything without removing the older versions....stop assuming people!
everything I do, I wipe clean before I update! I've been following this protocol since '91...

Any update to MMC for Dell Customers would be made available by Dell at http://support.dell.com/.
