What are you pissing and moaning about? (note that I used the proper suffix for a present participle, not a past participle)

1. Continue to use version 10
or
2. Use a competing product
What? There are no competing products? And you work for a software company? Sounds like a great opportunity!

What I'm confused about is how 2 processors, 2 cores apiece = 3 CPU? dual core = 1.5 CPU?

we charge 100k per processor/core :)

you must work for oracle

//edit typo

He could work for any number of companies. We charge $100k per copy for our client software (which comes with about $10k in hardware as well). Software with a limited target audience is expensive.

we have to upgrade we are currently on version 9 which is no longer supported.

check out this little gem i just received. i asked him about quad core procs.

A quad core would be licensed at 2.5 CPU. If the box had two quad-core CPU?s then it would require a 5 CPU license.

so 80K X 5 = $400,000 in licening for one server.

i think my bosses will have some meetings and start looking a Cognos but i have no idea what their pricing scam is either.

Ahh, the ole "forced into end of support, so if you want support you'll have to buy a completely new product"

That's where I normally tell them to take a hike. Freakin "customer retention" programs. It's more like once they got you as a customer they will milk you for every penny.

Veritas and EMC are exactly the same way.

Ever checked out Oracle or IBM DB2 licenses?
x money/core for x86
y money/core for RISC/IA64
z money/core for UltraSPARC-T1
I think Oracle charges 0.25 "licenses" per core for T1, 0.75 for x86 dual cores, and 1.0 per core for POWER/Itanium, unsure about "regular" SPARC.
