DRM will NOT go away beacause people boycott it. The games that DRM is on WILL go away.
Again, wrong. Intuit Turbo Tax is a prime example. Intuit tried DRM on it, the customers were ticked off and basically voted with their wallet and bought competing products. Within months the company apologized for the stupid idea, did an about face and removed the DRM junk. Customers have the power to make companies do the right thing, it's suckers and idiots that accept it and "learn to deal with it" that allow DRM to fester.

Take a look at the digital music industry as another example. The music companies were whining that without DRM nobody would make music anymore etc etc. Pure and simple, BS. The labels are now pushed kicking and screaming into releasing drm-free music because customers don't want the hassle of DRM.

So you can go not play the game, and continue bitching about the DRM that you have not experienced on a game you do not own. Let the real gamers enjoy the game and beat the DRM.
In other words, you can be one of the suckers that enjoys getting ripped off. I will spend my entertainment dollars such that I actually get enjoyment out of them. Further, I can enjoy the game just fine, without DRM, the DRM-free version is already out.....

Ok. I personally hate DRM. I bypass it as soon as I can. But it won't go away. A tax program is a bad example. There are lots of tax programs. How many 60's art deco horror games set in underwater cities are there? point proven.

I don't enjoy being ripped off. I torrent plenty of games. But when a good game that I have been waiting for comes out, I pay for it to show the publisher that the game is a good one and more games like it should be made. I have no problem pirating crappy games, but good games deserve to be purchased.

So I guess you could say that instead of pirating the games with DRM, I buy the game and remove the DRM.

Just like there are plenty of tax programs, there are plenty of games. It doesn't have to be 60's art deco horror game to be entertaining. That's why I said, I have lots of choices.

But when a good game that I have been waiting for comes out, I pay for it to show the publisher that the game is a good one and more games like it should be made.
I understand that, but by buying the game, you are basically providing positive reinforcement for negative behavior. You are giving them monetary incentive to keep doing bad things (restrictive DRM).

So I guess you could say that instead of pirating the games with DRM, I buy the game and remove the DRM.
You should buy the good games without DRM, and either not use the ones with DRM, or simply torrent a DRM-free version. Then send an email to the company saying the game was a great product, but the DRM restrictions made you not inclined to buy it. If enough people do it, they get the message.

*sigh*

The point I am making about the tax programs is people NEED them. If one of them is different than the rest, people aren't going to use it. You cannot say the same thing about games.

The message the company will get will be to stop developing games for PCs, where pirate copies and torrents have killed the market. They will instead make them for consoles.

And as far as positive reinforcement of negative behavior, do you think the companies really give a fuck about a few people torrenting the game and emailing them, especially after they made a huge killing on 360 sales? And just think of what would happen if the company lost a lot of sales to piracy, and had all these emails from people who openly admit pirating the game. Can anyone say lawsuit / ISP complaint? I may be going a bit far, but it seems to me if they have ips and emails of people who admit pirating, they can then go and connect to you and nail you with filesharing.

I mean, I fully support pirating, but only when you cannot afford the game.

What is so incredibly bad about the DRM anyway? No rootkit, easily bypassed, no system problems... Other than the obvious "OMG IT HAS DRM FUCK THIS GAME" bullshit, what is the big problem? Sure, there are some people on 2k forums who can't get the game running, but there are ALWAYS people who can't run a game, no matter what the reason.

I really don't see DRM in games as much of a problem. I've never run into a problem, I've had no problems with Bioshock, and as long as the reactivation tool works correctly, I see no problems with it in the future.

edit: It just really pisses me off when there's this great game that comes out, it's taken forever to develop, it's nothing like other popular games, and it's a spiritual successor to one of the best first person RPGs ever, and all these whiny little fuckwads go on a power trip because it has some DRM in it.

Pirating a game just because it has DRM simply tells the company to spend more money on better DRM, increasing their overhead and lowering the number of games they wish to release. It will also make the company look more towards consoles, since games are much harder to pirate.

You are not helping the problem, you are making it worse. If we purchase games with low level DRM and crack it instead of downloading the game, maybe the publishing houses will stick to low level DRM. If their games are pirated like crazy, guess what? They are going to up their DRM. Make it stronger, more of a pain in the ass, more restrictive.

The limit to installs that Bioshock has is a DIRECT RESULT of people pirating games and circumventing the DRM.

I'm not really concerned.

The more they restrict with DRM, the sooner it will collapse. When they really start hearing the complaints, notice the boycotts, take a toll on the support lines, they'll re-think the situation. DRM is good in theory but it was never meant to work. It's simply not realistic, and slowly game and software makers will realize that it'll only hurt them. In the long run, everything will be cracked. Everything will be pirated. The only result of DRM is that the legitimate users are paying the price. A legitimate buyer who doesn't know how to bypass the DRM or get a copy that has been cracked. Those people are their market and they're losing them handfuls at a time.

DRM will fall sooner than later.

No. Publishers are too greedy. PC gaming will fall, and we'll be left playing FPSs on consoles, which is horribly un-fun compared to mouse+keyboard.

I bought it, and I'm glad I did.

It's been a breath of fresh air in the sewage plant of games that have been released lately.

qft. When a good game comes out, who gives a fuck if it had DRM. There are many ways around it.

Buy the game for the enjoyment, download a crack to get rid of the DRM. Problem solved.

Illegal filesharing is not the answer to games with DRM. All of the posters talking about how they should share the game just to spite 2k are simply adding to the belief of large publishers that DRM is necessary.
And buyers of the game just reinforce the fact that publishers can do what they want and still make their money.

As for supporting the game because the PC market is dependent on the need for games to succeed, that's hogwash. The gaming market for PC is wide open and gamers are craving something new and interesting. That unfulfilled need will keep open the doors for new developers as long as that need exists.

Welcome to a few weeks ago

We've been bitching about it over in the PC gaming forum for a while.

edit: and it's a great game, so suck it up and deal with the SecuROM and activations.

You know what's going to happen if everyone starts boycotting the developers and the games don't sell well?

The publishers will not publish games from the devs. If it is in house, the team will be disbanded and all the pub companies will turn into EA mega houses. Boycotting will only hurt the pc gaming market.

I don't give a shit anymore. I'm tired of taking it in the pants for no reason. I don't care if the disk contains the Lord Jesus Fucking Christ, I'm not buying this trash anymore.

Jesus is not going to be very happy when he figures out that you didn't legally purchase his latest release...
