this is what my University has to say about it...big mass email

April 16, 2007

TO: University of Minnesota Faculty, Staff, and Students

FROM: E. Thomas Sullivan, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and
Provost

SUBJECT: Today's tragedy at Virginia Tech

Dear students, faculty and staff:

Today's news of the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech
University gives us all reason for pause. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to all of those impacted by this tragedy.

We have one of the largest, most urban campuses in the
country. Constantly improving security is an important
priority for University officials. In recent years, we've
invested millions in expanding video surveillance, growing
our police force and providing critical training and
planning for our police, security and emergency response
officials.

Unfortunately, the best planning and preparation in the
world are sometimes not enough to prevent random acts of
violence. That is why it is so important for students,
faculty and staff to pay attention to their friends, their
surroundings and observe appropriate security protocols. If
you observe potential risks to safety and security, please
don't hesitate to report it to the University of Minnesota
Police Department by calling 911.

The University has crisis counseling services available,
including crisis and mental health services. This free,
confidential service is a valuable resource for anyone
struggling with personal challenges. To learn more, visit
http://www.ucs.umn.edu/

Also, to learn more about the University's safety, security
and emergency preparedness resources, visit
http://www.safety.umn.edu/

We are all shaken and deeply saddened by this horrific
tragedy at Virginia Tech. Thank you for your continuing
personal efforts to keep our campus safe.

I'm hoping there aren't any copycats...

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but this has happened many times, and there for has been copycatted many times already. Doesn't matter if you catch your girl in bed with some guy or plan an elaborate killing spree.

RANDOM asian guy detained

He was said to have quarrelled in a dormitory with his girlfriend, whom he believed had been seeing another man. A student adviser was called to sort out the row. But the killer produced a gun and shot dead both his girlfriend and the adviser.
They might as well open up a detention center for all the random Asian guys they'll find at VT's school of engineering.

Actually, the guy in the picture is a reporter for the college newspaper. Supposedly, he was ignoring police warnings and kept trying to get closer.

Chicago Sun-Times

Authorities were investigating whether the gunman who killed 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history was a Chinese man who arrived in the United States last year on a student visa.

The 24-year-old man arrived in San Francisco on United Airlines on Aug. 7 on a visa issued in Shanghai, the source said. Investigators have not linked him to any terrorist groups, the source said.

Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus? security response, the source said.

I apologize for my remark at the beginning of the thread. I did not know the full extent of the situation and looking back I realize it was a callous thing to say. I hope everyone is ok. There is someone I know who is missing and I'm hoping that he is ok.
Glad that you're OK.

Oh fvck...this just in...

At latest press conference (8 PM) police say that descriptions of the gunman from West AJ (dorm shooting) and Norris Hall (class shooting) do not match.

They are now again saying there might be a second gunman.

edit: They have a person of interest they are seeking for the first shooting, the gunman from the second shooting is confirmed dead.

Wow, when you go to class, the last thing you are thinking that can happen is a shooting rampage that can happen. I was in class this morning, from 9-10 AM with my friend, we are both grad students at GT, him from VT and me from TAMU. At the time we knew nothing about it, and were just going about our normal routines. I called him about an hour ago and his sister (current student @ VT) and thankfully all of her friends are safe. None of the students did anything to deserve this..

I know that it is seemingly a copycat of other shootings at other educational places... I'm just hoping it doens't happen anywhere else on other college campuses. Because, well, like someone said, the last thing you're thinking about when you go to class is someone shooting you. And really, if you think about it, anyone could do it...

Eyewitness reports are historically unreliable. Reporters are even worse.

Repeating myself. If you are a student, please check the other sticky in ATOT. If you know parents or sibs that are trying to get to VT, they should call the Dean's office to make arrangements. They have also setup a shuttle to/from campus.

Really glad to hear you're okay, Kevin. I didn't hear about this until near the end of the school day and then remembered that you go there. Came to ATOT to see if you were posting and was getting a little worried after going through 28 pages before seeing your username. Take care of yourself and your friends through this.

Thanks so much man!

Right now a big problem is the reporters. They are EVERYWHERE. I know they are doing their jobs, but it can be very obnoxious.

Right now classes are canceled until Tuesday, but I would suspect the rest of the week to be canceled.

According to NPR, the police were interviewing their person of interest in the first shooting when the second shooting occurred.

Jebus, we might be talking more than one at this point. WTF!

Could it be...two unrelated but equally sad events took place on the same day within hours of each other? Double WTF!

I think the gunman's family will be run out of town once they identify the shooter.
Yes, because they are also responsible. In fact, they should be put on trial for accessory to murder.
