I don't think that the industry is necessarily 
kissing up as the songs on this particular album are quite powerful.  I agree that the arrangements aren't particularly spectacular and lack most of the techno-wizadry that is typically used to grab the listeners attention.
As others have stated, I also am of the opinion that the overall variety/quality of music from mainstream rock/pop labels appears to be suffering when compared to years past.
It may not be completely accurate, but my recollection is that 'back in the day' it was not uncommon to have groups such as (list follows) regularly competing for airtime and consumer attention ... all in the same 5 - 10 year period.  If we compare today with the 5 - 10 year period I have in my mind, I don't think that we are even close.
