What. The. Fvck.

Alright so i live with a guy that's a consultant and so he flies all over the place for work. (I've got a tiny room, but get the apt to myself while he's gone) Anyway, currently he's on a 2 week vacation in utah and as it turns out, his dad decided it's ok for him to live at the place while his son is gone. Is this fvcking normal? acceptable?

I've ready shot him an email yesterday, but I'm guessing he didn't quite catch my drift as his dad is still here today.

My dad, while he was living, was constantly between apartments. I could easily see him having done the same thing.

I wouldn't be weirded out if the roommate's part of the rent was still being paid. I would be annoyed, however, if they were both living there at the same time.

You don't have a voice in what your room mate does with his share of the appartement. It's already paid for.

What nationality is your roommate? I know my dad would do the same thing.

Apartment, we're both subleasing. I emailed him saying that I'm not comfortable with his dad living here and if that's something he needs, I'll find another place to live.

They're both fobby russians

Incorrect. Unless the landlord's terms allow tenants to sublet the living space, OP can trespass him at the drop of a hat if his name doesn't appear on the lease.

It's also worth noting that having an unauthorized resident usually constitutes a breach of the lease, and can be grounds for eviction for all of them.

(I'm a landlord in MA.... but IANAL)

Exactly.

BUT, couldn't the other roommate say that his father is just visiting and he's letting him crash for a few days?

Does the lease state anything that any occupant staying over X amount of days must be put on the lease or something like that?

I'd have let him live for a little while (maybe a week TOPS) if the roommate had explained how dire a situation it was and *asked* instead of told.

Give him the boot a la trespassing.

Ground for eviction for having your Dad in the appartement when you are not there? I say the OP is a dick.

Alright,
finally got a response about wtf is going on. His dad is going thru the final steps of getting his green card, so he's back and forth with the russian embassy this week - that's why he's staying here (they're from RI). Phew...

I just told him to give me a heads up in the future so it doesn't screw up with my plans and all.

Note the boldface... "resident", not "guest"... if someone is clearly using the space as their *primary* residence, it can be (and has been) successfully argued that the person is living there according to the letter of the law, maybe not its spirit. And eviction would be brought about by the landlord for *all of them* including OP, so this would have no bearing on him being a dick or not. You have to understand from the landlord perspective though... renting an apartment to two people and having 6-8 hotbunk in and out of the place because they all work different shifts is not an unusual occurrence.

But this is thankfully all moot now, per OP's last update :)

That sounds much better. Never mind my comment in my previous post. I apologize.

His son is already paying rent and is not there...

Although I don't think what he's doing is appropriate without permission. The OP does have the right to choose his roommates.

Your roommate pays for his apartment for the entire month, right? Well, if that's true, then he's not being unfair.....a-hole'ish maybe, but his space is already paid for.

I used to live with a girl who was absolutely insane. Her mom would frequently come down and stay at our apartment for days (a week once) at a time. Her mom was a VERY successful lawyer, but apparently too cheap to spring for a hotel.
