Great. You have the engine that has tons of parts on National Backorder. Great. The starter should be fine tho. I will look it up when I go to work on monday. I will LYK the cheapest place to order from in the country.

Haha, of course I do. That's my luck for ya! That would be really cool of you, I appreciated it!

Thanks,
Dan

HD sells the repair manual as well for $9.99. But the starter is only 4 bolts, and a power connection. Can't really screw it up. Just take it off, swap out the gear, and you are good to go.

OK, update...

I took the engine cover off and took a look...

Looks like the starter gear is stripped to hell? Where can I find another starter for this guy? Edit: I would assume it wouldn't be extremely hard to install the new starter, would it? I think I'd have to take the flywheel off, but that doesn't seem like it's too hard.

Thanks.

gear unengaged
unengaged, wide shot
engaged, wide
engaged, close up
pic of engine

wow that gear is worn down to nothing, i'm surprised it worked at all 🙂

Sounds good, is there a trick to getting the gear off?

Hah! I thought those were session IDs that timed out. Now THAT was stupid of ME! 😱

I've got PDF manuals of as many of my tools and appliances as I can get my hands on. I LOVE that. Sometimes easier to find than the printed copies I have in my files.

Reference #783, pg. 17 of MS0635.pdf. Part #693059, Gear-Pinion. Or assembly #876, part #495877, which includes spring, pinion and more.

Hell, if that's electric start, it may be the battery doesn't have enough gumption to throw the solenoid of the starter into the flywheel, so it's not fully engaged.

Hmm? Most small engine starters I've seen only use the solenoid to kick on the starter motor, the gear rides on a spiral spline on the starter motor shaft. When the starter motor spins, inertia sends the starter gear up the spiral to engage the flywheel gear.

when the battery doesn't have enough juice, the solenoid rapidly clicks on and off (rattling) and the engine will turn very slowly or not at all....

We have a winnar! 🙂

I came up with the same parts. I found the 693059 online at sears. (sears part 71.500.693059 for $4.25 picked up from a service center) 495877 was $17.80

Sorry took so long to post. I posted this earlier tot his thread at about 6:00 but it seems to have dissapeared *shrug*

No problem, thanks anyway. I ended up getting it from "Jacks Small Engines" - it was only $7 so it's all good. Thanks again for all the help.

OK, got the part and have the engine all apart. Question is, how do i get the gear off? Theres a top peice holding it on, and I have no idea how to get it off...

Thanks,
Dan

exact same thing happened to my riding lawn mower... it's a briggs and stratton motor... maybe you have the same issue

Thanks, actually we have the problem all figured out, and I got the new part. Just can't figure out how to get the starter gear off.

Uh oh...looks like I need to get the flywheel off before I can take the starter off...this is a problem. I have no wrenches this big!
