I believe the software he is referring to is through the company "RedChair" found here.
Which explains the delay in getting a response, seeing as though it's not Creative.
To the OP, what can this software do, that Creative's can't, for your trip purposes?!?

Drag and drop support. Notmad > Creative software. For the time being for the trip, just the creative software despite it being bloated.

Redchair is one of the best companies I've ever dealt with. If you had prepared for this in advance, you would not be in this problem. First off, it's pretty clear that the licenses are linked PER DEVICE. You can't go around swapping devices and hoping it'd work. This is not Windows XP here. No piracy. You should have told them you were getting a new device so they could issue you a new activation code. Contact red [at] redchairsoftware [dot] com.

For just copy-paste MP3s the Creative software works just fine, you can do a custom install and only install the "nomad explorer" not all the other junk. I filled my 30 GB Zen Xtra using the Creative explorer and it worked fine.
Tip: one thing the nomad explorer is bad at is copying files from a file server drive. Copy any such files to your local drive first.

Does Creative have a customer service line that you can call and ask for an expedited code or something?
