Something tells me all the little pansies suggesting such actions are too meek and afraid to do anything like this in real life. I bet you are all pushovers when you step away from the computer. Sad that your e-peener is the only way you can get off.

I can see our OP sitting at his computer with you hovering over him going "I bet you won't you little pansy..."

Granted, changing their settings is criminal, but is it really that big of a deal? Its about as anonymous as you can get. Just hop on, change the name, and hop out. If they do it again and lock it down then so be it, at least you did something.

This isn't that big of a deal guys, it happens all the time.

I can't tell if you're just trolling or actually this much of a prick. Do you really think any of them are serious about their 'suggested' actions for the OP?

And yeah, I'll say that to your face. Seems odd you put so much anger into your posts; makes me wonder if you're the pushover in real life.

As for the OP being 'worked up enough to post about it' I think that this is an off-topic board, and he's posting about something out of the ordinary. He doesn't seem worked up at all to me.

Find out who it is, then print up flyers and post them all over your neighborhood. That'll teach em.

I say you post a new thread saying you locked them out of their router to piss off the moral police here. Then when they get all mad (madder than they are now) and hypothetically threatening you use one of those backhanded state communism comments. After that for good measure you say "Well it's as much as my right to screw with you guys then it is for you guys to whine like little pansies amirite?" By doing this your essentially completing the paradox irony cycle.

I believe the OP lives in a HOA community, so people would probably be more outraged by flyers than by racism.

I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin' 'don't blame me'
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else
Spend all their time feelin' sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma's too thin; your daddy's too fat

Get over it
Get over it
All this whinin' and cryin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

You say you haven't been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if I gave you some cash
The more I think about it, old billy was right
Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight
You don't want to work, you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn't owe you a thing

Get over it
Get over it
If you don't want to play, then you might as well split
Get over it, get over it

It's like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You're makin' the most of your losin' streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin' everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I'd like to find your inner child and kick it's little ass

Get over it
Get over it
All this bitchin' and moanin' and pitchin' a fit
Get over it, get over it

Get over it
Get over it
It's gotta stop sometime, so why don't you quit
Get over it, get over it

That statement says volumes about your complete lack of character & integrity.

call the FBI? I understand radio domain is under federal jurisdiction and broadcasting racist remark is a federal crime?

I see nothing wrong with logging in and changing the name for respect and humor purposes.

I see everything wrong with escalating it and locking them out of their own router. They may be racist, but they are entitled to their opinion and it is not your right or responsibility to judge them and define a penalty.

my friend moved to an apartment and couldnt afford cable internet. He needed it for WOW and other stuff, music stuff, etc.

He hooks up his wireless connections and finds an open connection named "Jesus Saves"

He says, "Jesus saved me!"

In real life? LOL. This is something that would be done entirely over the internet/radio waves. It's not something you can do "in real life", you *have* to do it over the internet.

So yeah. Nobody is going to break into a wireless router "in real life" for a couple reasons.

1- Knowing an SSID doesn't really give you a clue where the router is.
2- Physical proximity to the router is useless, you need to connect to it remotely from another computer to do anything useful.
3- Anything you could do to a router given physical access would be very clearly illegal. Accessing an unsecured router remotely is only officially illegal in a few places, and doing so leaves little evidence that could be used by the average person.

Ahh, rationalizing vandalism on a technicality. Welcome to 21st century America.

ZV

Zomg you are vandalizing the forums, call the internet police!

If a wireless router is wide open, and broadcasting it's SSID, that is the equivalent of an internet forum such as Anandtech's being open for anyone to register and post.

In much the same way as a moderator could abuse their power here, anyone who uses a public un-passworded access point could abuse their powers as well, but I don't see how it can be described as vandalism or illegal in either case.

Now, there are admittedly some retarded laws recently put into place in a few states. If you do live in such a state, it is illegal, but I don't see how that automatically makes it illegal everywhere.

I don't like the color of your car. I'm going to have it painted lime green without your knowledge. You'll find it in your driveway tomorrow green with gold wheels and a purple velvet interior.

Enjoy.

Another consideration, many notebooks I've seen have wireless software that AUTOMATICALLY connects you to the first open network it can find when in range, with no user interaction. I would really hate to ever see anyone prosecuted for that.

It's also easily conceivable that with such a setup, you could connect to the wrong network, and mistakenly think it is yours.

That said, changing router settings is probably going a little far, though I personally don't think changing the SSID is a big deal. Legal? Probably not in the strictest sense. But this situation would be akin to me flying a swastika from my balcony with the subtext 'F*CK KIKES* under it. I doubt anyone would put up with that, even if I'm doing so from my own property.

Wikis and AT are specifically setup so that anyone can use them. Even moreso, AT has to give you explicit permission to post, by creating an account. I fail to see how this is analogous to accessing someone else's internet connection via their unsecured network. I doubt the intent of the router owner was to share their internet connection with the rest of the neighborhood. They most likely lack the understanding of how it works.

I'm not trying to say that it is right or wrong, just that your analogies are flawed. If we were talking about a wifi hotspot in a coffee shop, for example, it would be more comparable since that wifi is specifically setup for the public.

One costs thousands of dollars to fix, one takes 30 seconds of work and is free. It's more like going up to someone's house whose address is 1269 and taping a piece of paper over the 12 part so their address now reads "69", then running away giggling. Technically, you're trespassing and littering, but there's no harm done.

Jeez, you guys think a little prank is an affront to personal liberties and should be prosecuted. :rolleyes;

Oh noes. A bad name. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. But this is the 21st century. Words do hurt. Lets breaks some bones because those words hurt me.

My SSID is "PATRIOT", I'm sure some might think I'm a freedom fighter or an insurgent, so I guess i should expect the nearest F-16 to drop a laser guided bomb on my router any second.
