Despite some people's insistence we all have every RIGHT to be annoyed by anything. We do not, however, have the right to perform illegal actions in response to that annoyance.

If you want to follow the law, you can't do anything besides try to find out who the SSID belongs to, talk to them about it, and hope they change it.

If you want to break the law you can change the SSID, lock them out of it, etc.

Or you could find a black neighbor in the vicinity, tell them about the SSID, and let them handle the situation however they see fit.
Or complain to the HOA to create bylaws regarding offensive broadcasting of SSIDs a fine-able offense.

What a pussy thing to do.

People have a right to say or think any god damned thing they want. Sure you have a right to be offended by it as well, but you do not have the right to try and take away their freedom of speech/thought just because it offends you.

Even if it is the suggestion to commit a crime? 'KILL_ALL_NIGGERS' is a suggestion to commit homicide. AT is not a democracy, and is self-policing, so we obviously wouldn't be able to start a thread entitled 'KILL ALL awesome people' without a repercussion of some type.

Going by your ideals on absolute freedom of speech (which I very closely support), what would you say about someone in public extolling the virtues of raping your 9 year old daughter? He's not on your property, right? And he's exercising his freedom of speech.

I seem to remember a music group with the song Cop Killer describing exactly how to perform the act in concerts. Don't think they got arrested or anything.

In that scenario...

He can say it all he wants. The second he tries to follow through is the second he meets Mr. 9mm or Mr. Baseball bat or Mr. Foot Up His Ass...whichever happens to be available at the time.

So you wouldn't do anything to him and just let him blather on?

Yeah, that was ICE-T and his weird metal rap group. There was some flak about it, but it still seems like freedom of speech is being challenged over and over.

http://www.amconmag.com/12_15_03/feature.html

"When Bush travels around the United States, the Secret Service visits the location ahead of time and orders local police to set up ?free speech zones? or ?protest zones? where people opposed to Bush policies (and sometimes sign-carrying supporters) are quarantined. These zones routinely succeed in keeping protesters out of presidential sight and outside the view of media covering the event."

So basically, you can say whatever you want, but you can't say it unless you're allowed to, and you can only say it in a quarantine zone.

Go knock on their door, politely let them know that you noticed their wireless network was unsecured, offer to help them secure it and, in passing, mention that you were surprised they'd choose an offensive name for something that can be seen publicly, and would they mind if you changed it to something else?

Teach by example.

Or...you know....just mind your own fucking business and stop being offended any time something doesn't fit in with your world view.

I dunno, it seems neighborly to help them fix something they probably don't realize is broken, and they always have the option of declining. I would generally consider that to be regular social interaction, not sticking your nose into somebody else's business. Then again, the idea of interacting with neighbors in some areas seems to be an out of date idea, so maybe it is interfering unnecessarily. Racism aside, if I wasn't savvy enough to secure my wireless, I'd probably be grateful for at least the offer of help.

You forget that he's an angry, angry man who hates people.

Don your white sheet, put a noose hanging from a tree, and put up a sign that says, "lynching at 4 pm." See who shows up and you'll know whose network it is.

I see everything wrong with escalating it and locking them out of their own router. They may be racist, but they are entitled to their opinion and it is not your right or responsibility to judge them and define a penalty.

I don't like the color of your car. I'm going to have it painted lime green without your knowledge. You'll find it in your driveway tomorrow green with gold wheels and a purple velvet interior.

Enjoy.

Right. Well, if you're morally offended enough by the color of my car you can take that up with me like rational adults. If we reach a conclusion about how it should look then I'll happily let you pay to change the color of my exterior, interior and buy new rims, since you seem so willing to equate dropping a couple thousand dollars on something just to try and fail at making a point on ATOT.

But until then, why don't you keep it in the same ballpark instead of trying to criticize people by blowing things out of proportion. Nobody I've ever known has equated blatant racism to a color of a car and until you can make the connection, you and your high horse can get lost.

It's called making a point via an absurd, or exaggerated, example.

Like if I said...

Nobody I've ever known is as stupid as you are, I bet you try to make toast with a telephone.

Pretty sure that's the definition of trolling, too.

Modifying the settings of private property is legal when that private property is specifically configured to allow the general public to make those modifications. For example, wikipedia.

Should the law be different because the configuration was the result of an error or incompetence?

What if wikipedia suddenly announced that public editing of pages was all the result of an error, and everyone who ever made a contribution to the site would be sued for trespassing?

The situation with open wireless routers is that it is *impossible to tell* if they are open intentionally to allow public access, or they are open due to incompetence of the administrator. You either *never use wireless* or you risk trespassing, according to your logic. You can't even setup your own wireless router and use it, because there is the possibility that someone already has one running with the default settings and you might connect to it thinking it is your new router.

You're really this dense?

Wikipedia has a definitive guideline for data entry. Other sites have terms of use agreements. You can compare it to, say, a Starbucks which often has free WiFi. However, you can be sure that if you inquire to a manager about it, they will gladly give you their terms of use agreement which will list any and all guidelines regarding it.

It's just like leaving the keys in your car doesn't merit someone stealing it. Have fun arguing that "there was no way of knowing" the car wasn't intended for anyone to hop in and drive around.

He's not hacking their router to make fake ebay purchases. It's a completely harmless prank pulled on a bunch of jerks broadcasting an offensive name, knowingly or not. Chill with the hyperbole.

It's a pretty serious federal crime if you access their router. It's NOT harmless and it's HIGHLY illegal at the federal level.

You're insane, but we already knew this. Accessing a neighbor's wireless router without authorization is not a "serious federal crime." Unless you live next to the Pentagon or White House or something. Murder, that's a serious crime. Embezzelment. Armed robbery. Arson. Sexual assault. Those are serious crimes. Jaywalking, littering, and stealing bandwidth from someone's router are about as serious as tearing the "do not remove" label off a mattress.

Please show me articles detailing the scores of prosecutions for this heinous act. Too difficult? Show me three. I think I heard of one in FL where a guy was sitting in his car and the police cited him for siphoning bandwidth from a cafe...which offered free wireless access.

Ahhh yes...the old "Think like the rest of us do or we will punish you" maneuver.
You have a right to choose to not live in a HOA.

^^^^^ Bolded was quickly edited out by the OP.

You hate calling out racists for what they are, on an equal level with racism itself.

You're putting words in my mouth, i said nothing of the sort. I was actually taking some time to craft a good answer, not equating them as equals.

To qualify my original statement "well hasn't this thread gone down a dirty little path" I was simply referring to all of the emotions that have boiled to the surface.

k. The topic will do that.

I simply feel that racist are ignorant bullies, and that, as citizens, we should immediately stand up to these troglodytes every time they try to float their weasel ways.

Just to clarify, the reason for my edit was that I originally misread your question. Hence why I removed that part and put 'I dunno' while I thought about it and tried to craft a reply. I originally thought you said "Which is the dirtier path to you, racism, or the racist calling out what they are". Which, if taken with my original reply, makes sense.

I certainly don't agree with what they opted to use for their network, but it's nothing illegal, no matter how offensive it may be.

Entering their network and changing it, modifying it, or fucking with them in any way via their wireless system may however be illegal, and should you take that route, I hope they find out it's you and have you prosecuted to the full extent of the laws.

Unfortunately, the law is on their side in this. No matter how offensive it may be, it's completely legal for them to use that phrase, but if you fuck with their wireless connection, YOU could end up on the wrong side of the law, no matter how offended you may be by their phrase.
