I was watching Shep Smith just now interviewing a guy on Fox. Apparently some things were said off the record that now, with the campaign over, can be told:

1) Palin did not know who was in NAFTA.
2) Did not know Africa was a continent; thought it was a country.
3) Before the Couric interview campaign staff had an idea of the questions that would be asked but Palin did not put much prep time in. Campaign staff felt the questions were fair and that she did poorly with them. Also, her staff vs McCain's had some friction and she was prone to get tempermental.

Now, most of us knew she was terrible. I said that I could have out-debated her in the VP debates and I was serious. I never thought she was this bad. This is truly mind-blowing bad. And yet, when asked today, she felt it was Obama's spending that had the democrats win.

I don't know who's in NAFTA either but not knowing that Africa isn't it's own country? What the fuck...

If I told you it stands for North American Free Trade Agreement, could you guess?

And I agree, Africa here is way worse.

BTW, this is from another thread. Some interesting bits in there.

Bill Clinton doesn't know what the definition if "is" is.

I'd be inquiring about the exact circumstances where this "information" came from. If anyone thinks *any* U.S. Governor truly doesn't know that Africa is a continent - seriously, you're really stretching for even the slightest slip-up of words.

17% of highschool kids in the US cannot find the US on a map.

I felt she was extremely isolationist so it is plausible that she is this unknowledgeable about the world. I thought she appeared unread in the extreme. All of her answers for anything in debates/interviews were generic and forcefed. I'd like to see another source for this, too, because I agree with you that it is bordering on completely unbelievable.

That narrows it down, but doesn't fully limit it to actual Members.

At any rate, why worry? She was ready!!!!!!

The Africa one is funny;

But I find it shocking that she didn't know who was in NAFTA since she is governor of a state that, I imagine, has more commerce with Canada than it does with the lower 48. If she knew Canada was in it but omitted Mexico, I could forgive that. The Governor of Alaska wouldn't give two shits about Mexico.

Edit: for clarity

How many kids thought the US was comprised of 57 states?

Did Shep say this stuff on TV? Is there a link to this anywhere?

Why would Alaska have more commerce than NY for instance? Heck, just one border city (Buffalo) has a population greater than the entire population of Alaska (if you include the metropolitan area. And, many residents go over the border all the time. Add onto that the population along the St Lawrence & NY probably does way more commerce with Canada than Alaska. There's a lot of trade with Alaska; just look at the lines of semis on the peace bridge & other bridges most days.

yes, i just saw it on fox too. i believe the leak came from former romny worker who's working on mccain campaign now.

so it's either mitt+rudy trying to throw palin under the bus or mccain trying to throw her under the bus.

palin is actually very popular with the religious base, so this could cause a split.

I'm pretty sure Palin is smarter than the average American. She had to not only memorize a lot of facts for her debates and the campaign, but she had to have some idea of their meaning to use them appropriately.
That said, it's shocking a person would go into politics, get elected governor of their state, and not learn the basics. Whether its that she has no intellectual curiousity, is fantastically lazy, or just doesn't care, it shows she was by far the wrong person to be chosen as a VP candidate.
It's also absolutley fantastic that John McCain would make the decision to put her on the ticket without finding out if she even knew basic facts about the world and our government.
It's shocking, really. And it proves that he was way to irresponsible a person to be our President.
Thank God, he lost.

And selected her for vice-president after meeting her once.
Remember, facts have a liberal bias.

Sorry, I meant that Alaska would have more trade with Canada than Alaska would have with the lower 48. I'll edit my post to try to make it more clear.

During an interview today, she said that she was tired of the partisan bickering and insults.

She said she looked forward to working with obama. I hope there's a trap door in the oval office if she is ever allowed in there.

I am actually really worried about this. I honestly think the Repub's higher offices decided early in this election to play soft and wing it with hopes that the country would be so bad off that regardless of what either Obama or Clinton the next four years would tank.

It sets them up with four years of scaring people and pointing out Demo blunders so that in the next election there is a really nasty battle between a worn down somewhat unsuccessful Obama and a nasty authoritarian power team of Romney-Guiliani.

Uhhh...I'm pretty certain Palin know's Africa was a continent. The lack of evidence is questionable in this thread.. ;)

C'mon, there are only three countries in the entire continent of North America!
