WTF is with BMW's radio commercials?

N8Magic

Lifer
They seem to be constantly airing a commercial that goes as follows:

"Visit your local BMW dealer and test drive a new 2003 320i, and for only a couple thousand more than a Honda Accord EX V6 you could be driving your own new BMW."

It then goes on to list the 320i's paltry list of standard features, which are so limited "The Legendary BMW Driving Experience" is listed as one of them. At the end of the commercial it again states how you can own a 320i for just a few thousand more than a Honda Accord EX V6.

Is this not pathetic or what? No one in their right mind and only a true loser badge snob would pick a strippo 320i over a loaded Accord EX V6 and pay more in the process. The Accord EX V6 (esp the 6-spd coupe) smokes the 320i in EVERY SINGLE WAY.

Agree?

This doesn't bother anyone else?

Where is NFS4? We'd actually agree on something car-related for a change! :Q

well that's where the brandname comes in.

moms listen to the commercial and say, "hey only couple thousands more I can get a BMW than a Honda!"

So basically they're pandering to the uninformed/stupid/ignorant consumer.

That's the kind of car I want to drive! 😛

But to the informed consumer, there is no prestige in owning a 320i. 😀

Well, BMWs are RWD while the Honda is FWD. And it looks a ton better. Those things might be important to some people...

can u tell me the advantage of RWD vs FWD?

Not having ever driven one I can't speak from experience, but people seem to think it's more fun, better on the track, and what not.

BTW, as far as I can tell, the MSRP of the 320i and the EX V6 coupe are virtually the same. Check here

Obviously the Accord is a better deal, but the 320i still looks way better if nothing else. 😛

I'd take a Accord V6 or Camry V6 over a underpowered 320i anyday. Plus you can can probably get a heck of a lot more options too with better performance. Plus the extra $$$ buys lots of Big Gulps and beef jerky.

I must saylow end models of of most brands are there for people that want to buy an emblem such as the old 318ti and the new MB C-class hatchback.

BMW has some of the best marketing around. There are a ridiculous amount of people who will blindly buy into their hype and brand. And it's not just stupid people either. I personally know people who went out and bought one as soon as they could afford it, without cross-shopping a single car or even bothering to research alternatives. Now there is a powerful brand.

It's not FWD.

Oversteer.

But... a BMW 320 sucks anyway. I would take the Accord.

Accord Coupe V6 KICKS. I didn't get a chance to drive the 6-speed but the automatic hauls. And the new interior for 2003 is WAY better than any previous Honda.

besides the stuff about torque and power that you can just google, another thing is that for RWD, you can lose control but gain it back easily(relatively speaking) and for a FWD it's hard to lose control but once you do you are fvcked

You've named the very two cars (brands) I would never buy. One is way overpriced and overhyped (had one years ago & it died after 44,000 miles - vowed never to consider one again) The other is bland with a fun to drive quotient of zero (have a few in the family and I refuse to drive one).

I value character and soul in a vehicle and it must be fun to drive; it's not just a tool or appliance that gets the job done.

My $0.02.

Yup. Timing chain broke while driving at 45 MPH & destroyed the engine & the car was totaled. (1987 316). Now if they half the price BMW's I would consider it worthwhile but at present prices I think it's a rip off. Like someone said - excellent brand marketing.
