I must saylow end models of of most brands are there for people that want to buy an emblem such as the old 318ti and the new MB C-class hatchback.

I don't think anybody's putting into play resale value. BMW's and Benz's have an extremely high resale value (1999 3-series are still going for ~$17k).

Comparison:

1999 BMW 323i ~ $18k
1999 Chrysler 300M ~ $12k
1999 Chrysler Concorde LXi ~ $8k
1999 Toyota Avalon XLS ~ $13k

Now which looks like the better buy?

A better buy? Thats a no-brainer: a 3 year old Chrysler 300M, preferably off lease. Also happens to be the most fun to drive in the list above.
Apart from resale values, look at cost of parts, maintenance costs (dealer charges), insurance cost.
Generally speaking, European>Japanese>American, exceptions apart.
